Savannah Guthrie Announces Pregnancy on ‘Today,’ Will Miss Olympics Due to Zika Concerns
Today anchor Savannah Guthrie announced that she is pregnant with her second child on Tuesday. She and husband Michael Feldman are expecting the baby in December and broke the news during a game of “Tuesday Trending Fishbowl.” When she drew the question “Are you pregnant?” from the bowl, Guthrie didn’t hesitate. “Well, yeah, I am pregnant!” exclaimed Guthrie, much to the excitement of her fellow Today anchors.
There was an unfortunate caveat to the news, though, regarding Guthrie attending the Olympics this summer in Brazil. “So I’m not going to be able to go to Rio,” explained Guthrie. “The doctors say we shouldn’t because of the CDC — or because of the Zika virus. I’ll miss it. You’ll have to go to female beach volleyball without me, Matt.”
All joking aside, the Zika concern is a real one. Brazil has dealt with a substantial outbreak of the disease since May of 2015, and the virus has been linked to increased cases of microcephaly in infants.
The news of Savannah’s absence from Rio didn’t dampen the excitement of her fellow anchors. But Savannah’s daughter, Vale, wasn’t exactly thrilled at the news. A video of Vale crying and saying she didn’t want another baby also had the anchors in a fit of laughter.
