All the New TV Projects Examining the Legacy of Princess Diana, 20 Years After Her Death
It’s been nearly 20 years since Diana, Princess of Wales, died in a car crash in Paris on Aug. 31, 1997, and a slew of new projects coming to TV prove that the world isn’t even close to being over its fascination with “The People’s Princess.”
In addition to ABC and CBS each airing two-hour specials in May — titled The Last 100 Days of Diana and Princess Diana: Her Life – Her Death – The Truth, respectively — Ryan Murphy also recently announced that the second season of his runaway hit show Feud will be titled Feud: Charles and Diana.
On Friday, May 5th, Dateline NBC will also be airing a two-hour special on Diana, entitled “The Life and Death of Princess Diana: A Dateline Investigation.” Andrea Canning will be speaking to the investigators involved in the case, as well as Diana’s close friends including her former bodyguard, Ken Wharfe. The special also feautures the first U.S. interviews with Paris police chief Martine Monteil.
In addition, HBO also just announced that it has secured the rights to a major documentary about Princess Diana that will air this year and has to be titled. The documentary will be driven mainly by interviews with Diana’s sons, princes William and Harry, and the lasting effect their mom has had on the world.
The BBC 2 comedy King Charles III has been in some hot water lately for a scene in an episode in which a ghost of Princess Diana shows up to talk to her sons.
With all of these shows airing over the next few months to a year, there are sure to be others that crop up on the horizon, depending on these shows’ popularity — but one thing is certain: Though Princess Di’s story did not have a fairy-tale ending, her legacy will live on.
