Jodie Whittaker finally talks about landing 'Doctor Who' role
After it was announced in July that she would be the 13th, and first female, Doctor Who, Jodie Whittaker is finally hitting the talk show circuit and talking about what it was like to find out she got the role and what life’s been like since.
In January, the current Doctor, Peter Capaldi, announced he would be stepping down at the end of the year. When Whittaker first got the call that she would be stepping in as the new Time Lord on the long-running series, she was admittedly emotional.
“When I was told, there was no, ‘Yeah. Thanks, thanks, thanks’,” Whittaker said. “I was more like, ‘[Fake cries] Are you kidding? OK. Thanks.’”
After getting the good news that she’d gotten the part, Whittaker then had to keep it a secret for months. She said it got to the point that she’d become paranoid about leaving her phone on the table in case someone might see an incoming text about the show.
And despite backlash online from fans who don’t want to see a female Doctor, Whittaker has gotten nothing but support from the former Doctors she’s talked to.
“I have spoken to a couple of the previous. They were wonderful in their support and excitement,” Whittaker said.
