‘Grimm’ Series Finale Recap: Blood Simple
Warning: This recap of “The End,” the series finale episode of Grimm, contains spoilers.
After the show savagely said goodbye to Hank and Wu last week, the bloodshed was far from over as the remaining members of the Grimm gang faced their final and toughest battle yet, and Grimmsters faced the sad reality that the end had arrived.
One by one, we all fall down
Nick wakes up in the destroyed police precinct, surrounded by dead bodies, and quickly remembers that Wu and Hank were among them. They had been taken out moments earlier by Zerstorer. He rushes to their side and tries to heal them with the stick, but it doesn’t work. Trubel runs into the bloody aftermath and declares, “If bullets won’t kill him, we have to do this the way our ancestors did — cut off his head.”
Nick calls Adalind and Renard to tell them that Zerstorer had sacked the precinct and what happened to Wank. “I was the only one he didn’t kill, couldn’t kill, I don’t know,” he explains guiltily. They pile on with Diana’s news that he also plans to take baby Kelly.
Nick is enraged. He sends Trubel to the cabin while he makes a weapons run at the spice shop. She says, in what turns out to be foreshadowing, “I don’t think we should split up.” But per usual, she does what her mentor says.
Meanwhile, at the spice shop, MonRosalee and Eve are still poring over books to no avail. Rosalee fears, “What if Zerstorer is unstoppable? We don’t know if he’s a devil, a dark force, or evil incarnate.”
Eve posits (again somewhat presciently, given what is about to happen to her), “Everything has a beginning and an end.”
Monroe stumbles onto a passage that might help the heroes defeat Zerstorer. He reads aloud, “When the beast appears invincible and death the only fate to those who fight it, only the strength of one’s blood can overcome the great evil and destroy the destroyer.”
The girls interpret that to mean some sort of blood magic could be the answer. Rosalee remembers a powerful potion that is complicated to blend because it has quite a few ingredients and requires mixing the blood of three opposing forces (a grimm, a hexenbiest, and a wesen) simultaneously by sticking a knife through the stacked hands of all three. “It is definitely a last-resort kind of potion.”
Nick arrives at the shop and breaks the news of Wu and Hank, and in turn, they tell him about the concoction that is “just this side of nuclear.” Nick says hopefully as he collects the original familial battle axe, “This better work because I don’t know how I am going to get close enough to him to cut his head off.”
Because they can no longer use Eve’s blood, the mix will require Adalind’s hand. Rosalee and Monroe head to the cabin separately, as Nick wants them to finish the cooking and then get out of Dodge. As soon as they leave, Eve launches into a speech about how she still has no regrets and is interrupted by Zerstorer busting into the shop. She screams for Nick to go ahead to the cabin without her, but her effort to fight the devil is short-lived, as he forces her to stab herself with the knife that she thrusts in his direction. Nick runs to her, and Zerstorer disappears. She whispers “No regrets” with her last breath after he calls her Juliette, and she dies in his arms. Guessing it’s for real this time. Again, he tries the stick one more time, to no avail. He has a momentary loss of cool as he starts screaming for Skullface to come back and fight and takes out his aggression on the shelves full of jars. (Uh, we get it that you just lost your ex-lover, but destroying your friends’ business is not cool, bro. Also, maybe calling them with a heads-up that Zerstorer is likely coming their way should be the next move.)
Meanwhile, up at the cabin, Renard and Adalind have a heart-to-heart. Renard apologizes (sort of) and vows to do what he can to protect her children. “We both made a lot of mistakes, but we did one thing right [Diana]. I’m sorry for a lot of that stuff. I wish I’d never heard of those damn keys or Black Claw.”
When Trubel arrives, she’s still spitting venom in his direction, thanks to his part in Meisner’s death. He assures her that her fallen comrade knows he is repentant and once again on the side of good.
Nick arrives at the cabin, and just as they successfully bleed themselves to finish the spell, Diana comes upstairs and announces that she feels different, can’t sleep, and oh yeah, Zerstorer is on his way to the woods. Apparently, as I suspected last week, he can track Nick via the stick.
“He wants it. He’s been looking for it for a very long time,” she says as she turns toward the door as Zerstorer walks in. He does his sonic boom move, knocking everyone but her out. Her eyes go purple as he turns into his hunky form, and she willingly takes his hand and walks outside with him.
Renard runs out and tackles him as Nick begs Trubel to take Kelly and get out of there. Diana is full Stockholm syndrome at this point, telling her dad not to hurt Skullface and even showing no reaction to her dad being stabbed in the chest by her new beau from the other place. Monroe tosses the sauce on him, and while it makes his face bubble up and seems to do damage at first, ultimately it fails, and he proceeds to pick off everyone but Nick, one after another. Adalind gets an axe to the chest (and again Diana does nothing to help her beloved mom). MonRosalee gets taken out by the snake. Trubel puts up a better fight but ultimately is strangled by the staff.
Wood you rather…
Nick is beside himself, as everyone he loves has been taken out in a night, and Diana announces that she and her brother are ready to go and that baby Kelly likes Zerstorer too. As he hovers over Trubel’s lifeless body, with the spot where the stick fits into the staff in plain view, he charges, “You’ve taken everything from me. You’re not going to take my son.”
Suddenly Zerstorer can speak almost perfect English. “That doesn’t need to happen. None of this does.” He wants the stick, and he can’t kill Nick as long as he has it, but he is “willing to give something in exchange for it. I can give them all back to you.” With one touch of the staff, he brings Trubel back to life.
Nick is ready to sign up. “I want the people I love to live again.”
But Trubel intervenes. “You can’t give it to this lying son-of-a-bitch devil. If he wants the stick so bad, why doesn’t he just take it? Why is he asking when he could just take it? What is he not telling you?” (Side note: Interesting that the one person who has almost always fought and killed first and asked questions second is approaching this offer most logically and thoughtfully.) “I understand what you want, but this will be the end of humanity. This isn’t about us or the ones we love.”
Family first
Nick attempts again to give him the stick, but Trubel grabs it and runs through the forest. Blows and kicks are exchanged, and Nick finally gets the upper hand and gives her a good whupping. He grabs the stick and starts to walk back to deliver it to the devil as the sky turns ominous.
He begins hearing voices saying things like “You cannot betray what we are” and “You can’t do what you want to do. Don’t give away what you hold.”
His mom appears, and then his aunt Marie. (Visions? His conscience manifesting itself? Ghosts like Meisner?) They confirm that Zerstorer cannot take the stick. He has to be given the stick, which is why he “has taken everyone you love so that you will give him what he wants.” Marie adds, “If you do this, you will sacrifice the world to end this pain and suffering.”
They assure him that he can beat Zerstorer and explain that the strength of blood reference has to do with his blood, the blood of his ancestors, the blood that makes grimms who they are. “It’s how we always found the way and the will to fight. We can defeat any evil together,” his mom urges.
Nick decides to give it the old college try, and he forms a kung-fu-movie fighting circle with Trubel and his dead relatives. Eventually, they cut off Zerstorer’s arm, and Nick picks up the staff. The stick flies into the hole, and Nick stabs him with his own rod.
As they all stand over his corpse, they explain that just like Trubel, they came back because they felt that Nick needed their help. As they were all descendants of the first grimm, they were linked. When Trubel reappears, she thinks that only two of them took Zerstorer down as she could not see Marie or Kelly. (Strangely, Diana could see them.)
He takes Bonaparte’s ring off of Adalind’s finger as he mourns her, but figures he can use the staff to bring them all back to life because it worked on Trubel. Just as he says that, Zerstorer’s body crumbles into dust and forms a portal.
Full circle
Nick and the staff get sucked into the portal, and suddenly he and Eve come flying through the mirror again and the clock is reset to a day or two earlier. Everyone is alive but does not remember that a few minutes ago they weren’t. Except for Diana. She informs Nick that Skullface didn’t come back through this time. “He’s dead and I’m not afraid anymore.” H yeah and Eve is a hexenbiest again.
“I’m so glad you’re all here. I know this isn’t going to make a lot of sense, but when I was in the other place, I didn’t know if I’d get back, and I felt what it would be like to lose all of you, everyone I ever loved, anyone who ever meant anything to me, my family.”
After a big group hug, Monroe notices the staff sitting where they had come through the portal.
Flash forward
The end scene takes place 20 years in the future. There’s a new Airstream in the woods, and it is decked out in the latest tech. A young man is drawing a picture of the epic battle that saved the world with all four grimms fighting Zerstorer. He establishes that he heard the story from his father and that Trubel is his dad’s third cousin on his mother’s side. (Thought they’d forgotten they promised that that fan question would be answered before the series ended.)
A grown-up Diana barges in and tells Kelly that Mom and Dad are waiting to go kill some wesen as a family. And, BTW, the triplets are coming too. (A nice nod to MonRosalee’s family, although it would have been fun to see them.) Diana grabs the staff for the fight and then uses her purple eyes to flip the grimm book closed one last time.
Although hopefully that’s just a temporary end to this fairy tale.
