'Game of Thrones' star says Trump's election had an impact on Jon Snow's finale speech

In a recent interview with Variety, Liam Cunningham, who plays Ser Davos Seaworth on Game of Thrones, said that Jon Snow’s impassioned speech about lies and the importance of staying true to our word was affected by the election in November.

Cunningham told Variety, “That speech that Jon Snow gave about the nature of lies and what’s been said, and what happens if we don’t stick to our word — we filmed that on exactly the day that a certain POTUS was elected, and it had incredible resonance while we were filming it.”

Obviously, “a certain POTUS” refers to Donald Trump.

In the scene, Jon Snow, played by Kit Harington, had just refused to break an oath he’d made to Daenerys. When asked why he didn’t just lie, Snow replies, “Talk about my father if you want. Tell me that’s the attitude that got him killed. But when enough people make false promises, words stop meaning anything. Then there are no more answers, only better and better lies. And lies won’t help us in this fight.”

Cunningham alluded to the fact that the election was being discussed on set that day, and that the outcome added a level of importance to Snow’s words. Said the actor, “That was the first time that Kit Harington had said those words on that platform in that scene. So it had a certain resonance, I’m sure you’ll understand.”
