‘Deadliest Catch’ Airs Capt. Sig Hansen’s Harrowing Heart Attack
On “The Widowmaker: Part 1” episode of Deadliest Catch, viewers watched as beloved Capt. Sig Hansen suffered a heart attack.
Hansen was doing a wrap-up interview of the crabbing season when he started having tightness in his chest and a cramp in his left arm. At the time he was navigating his boat, the Northwestern. “We’re doing your interview,” he told the cameraman. “I’m not dyin’, so just let that go. I’m not gonna let my family see that.”

For fans of the popular Discovery show, it was a tough episode to watch. Many tweeted about it, like @emmy_nicole, who wrote, “No Sig. Just No. I know the outcome but it really hurts to see this.” The heart attack also reminded fans of Capt. Phil Harris, who passed away in 2010, less than two weeks after suffering a massive stroke.
To add to the fans’ angst, the episode ended while Hansen was having the heart attack, so there was no resolution. Fortunately for fans, we know that Hansen survived and is currently in much better health. The story continues in next week’s Season 12 finale.
Deadliest Catch airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on Discovery.
