Diane Kruger in Oscar de la Renta.
1 of 55
For her penultimate red carpet at the Venice Film Festival, Diane Kruger went for a black and white gown. But don’t let the monotonous colors fool you into thinking this is a safe choice. From Oscar de la Renta’s Peter Copping, the strapless column silhouette’s covered in watercolor-esque flowers. The actress added a pop of color with Irene Neuwirth earrings with blue and red gems.
Dakota Johnson in Marc Jacobs.
2 of 55
Dakota Johnson’s breakout role might’ve been “50 Shades of Grey,” but the Venice Film Festival has been the equivalent of a debutante ball in the fashion world for the young star. Expanding her sartorial horizons, Johnson has with the help of stylist Kate Young, incorporated Prada, Miu Miu, Valentino, and now Marc Jacobs into her repertoire. On the red carpet for the premiere of “The Bigger Splash,” she went for a black off-the-shoulder gown with mirror embellishments from Jacobs’ Resort 2016 collection. She styled her hair in messy bed-head curls and looked straight out of the pages of a magazine editorial.
Tilda Swinton in Haider Ackerman.
3 of 55
Tilda Swinton is a multi-faceted woman who excels at anything she sets her sights on. Comedy? Nailed it as an unrecognizable editor in Amy Schumer’s “Trainwreck.” Art? Anything for its sake — she even put herself on display in a plexiglass box. Fashion? Just look to the Venice Film Festival red carpet for proof. The actress wore a lemon Haider Ackerman gown which draped off of one shoulder. The hemline trumpeted at her ankle and revealed light pink heels, which she coordinate with a statement red lip. Perfection.
Elizabeth Banks in Marchesa.
4 of 55
Elizabeth Banks, a juror at the Venice Film Festival, has an obvious theme going: florals. From Dolce & Gabbana to Andrew Gn, every dress she’s stepped out in has been blooming — literally. The premiere of “The Bigger Splash” was no exception as she wore a white lace and floral appliqué gown with a mullet hemline from Marchesa.
Bérénice Bejo in Zuhair Murad.
5 of 55
The Argentinian made quite a, well, splash at “The Bigger Splash” premiere in Zuhair Murad. Showing her legs — oh my! — in a mini dress, the short hemline was counterracted and made black tie appropriate with oversized bell sleeves and sequins.
Shia LaBeouf in corduroy cutoffs.
6 of 55
Arriving at the Venice Film Festival to debut his new film “Man Down,” in which he plays a marine in post-apocalyptic America, Shia LaBeouf was obviously inspired by his character as he carried a camouflage backpack.
Dakota Johnson in Rodarte.
7 of 55
For daytime, Dakota Johnson dressed down in a Rodarte dress perfectly fit for a garden party. From the Fall 2015 collection, the black and poppy covered piece was perfect for the photocall for “The Bigger Splash.”
Kristen Stewart in Chanel.
8 of 55
When not on the red carpet, Kristen Stewart prefers jeans and sneakers. In fact, she eschews high heels, only wearing them to pose for pictures on a red carpet (she took in her new film, “Equals,” barefoot). The self-described tomboy wears dresses and jumpsuits when the occasion calls for it, but she’s typically in black or at lease ensembles with an edge. But on Saturday at the Venice Film Festival, the 25-year-old showed up looking uncharacteristically princess-like in a Chanel satin dress with a lace top and trim from the Fall 2015 couture collection.
Alicia Vikander in Louis Vuitton.
9 of 55
Maybe Alicia Vikander was inspired by her new film, “The Danish Girl,” which takes place in another era (although not Medieval times so that assumption might be off). The Swedish actress, who plays Eddie Redmayne’s wife, wore a Lous Vuitton gown from the Resort 2016 collection that gave off major vintage — like way, way back — vibes.
Juliette Binoche in Armani Privé.
10 of 55
Juliette Binoche appeared as a mermaid on dry land — in the most beautiful way possible! — on the red carpet at the premiere of “The Wait.” Her black, blue, purple, and green gown, from Armani Privé’s Fall/Winter 2015 collection, gave off a fish scale-like effect and the sleeves were finished off with long fringe.
Eddie Redmayne with his wife, Hannah Bagshawe.
11 of 55
Get used to seeing this hot couple on the red carpet for yet another awards season because Eddie Redmayne’s performance in “The Danish Girl” is already getting buzz. He attended the premiere at the Venice Film Festival in a brown suit with a black tie while his lovely wife Hannah Bagshawe was elegant in a nude gown with sheer top.
Nicholas Hoult in Tom Ford.
12 of 55
There’s a reason why Tom Ford chose Nicholas Hoult not only to star in his directorial debut “A Single Man” but multiple campaigns as well: he wears a tuxedo really well — Tom Ford tuxedos at that.
Amber Heard in Alexander McQueen with husband Johnny Depp.
13 of 55
Friday might’ve been Johnny Depp’s night to shine, with “Black Mass” receiving rave reviews, but it was his wife’s turn in the spotlight on Saturday for her film “The Danish Girl.” Wearing an Alexander McQueen from the Resort 2016 collection, she made the floral gown punk with a mohawk-inspired hairdo.
Elisa Sednaoui in Burberry.
14 of 55
There’s actually a way to make boho fancy, and Elisa Sednaoui proved it. In a Burberry ensemble consisting of a suede fringe pencil skirt and mirror and polka dot embellished top, she looked fancy and laidback all at the same time.
Amber Heard in Zimmerman.
15 of 55
In Venice, Amber Heard brought beach chic via Australian designer Zimmerman. While her Stella McCartney evening dress from the night before was totally glam, she toned it down for “The Danish Girl” press conference the following day.
Eddie Redmayne in a red sweater.
16 of 55
Eddie Redmayne, who plays transgender figure Lili Elbe in “The Danish Girl” dressed like he was heading to the country club instead of a press conference in slacks, a red sweater, and navy blue loafers.
Alicia Vikander pulled off the perfect daytime photocall look wearing a Louis Vuitton black and white paisley dress from the house’s Resort 2016 collection.

There are some Chanel pieces that just don’t mesh with Kristen Stewart’s dark vibe: bouclé, rainbow colors, and floral appliqué. But this black quilted ensemble fits just right with the sometimes misunderstood actress. Not only is it black, but it’s a fancy shorts and T-shirt, which works really well with sneakers — and the famously heel averse star most likely made a switch into them shortly after her press conference for “Equals” came to a close.

Dakota Johnson in Prada.
19 of 55
Dakota Johnson or Gwyneth Paltrow? The “50 Shades of Grey” actress walked the red carpet at the premiere of her new film “Black Mass” in a pretty pink Prada dress. The simple slip silhouette and coloring looked very similar to the iconic Ralph Lauren dress Paltrow wore the to the Oscars in 1999 when she won for “Shakespeare in Love.” Maybe Johnson’s signaling something through her dress of choice? Maybe.
Amber Heard in Stella McCartney.
20 of 55
“Black Mass” might be one of Johnny Depp’s best performances yet — and that’s saying a lot — but his wife, Amber Heard, is on a similar winning streak, sartorially speaking that is. The actress accompanied Depp to the Venice Film Festival premiere on Friday in a black Stella McCartney gown. Fitting, right?
Diane Kruger in Hugo Boss.
21 of 55
Diane Kruger doesn’t dissappoint. In yet another showstopper, Diane Kruger looked so magnificent that her partner, Joshua Jackson, had to take a step back and admire his lovely lady. The red velvet number was very on-trend with its off-the-shoulder sleeves and ankle-length hemline, but added some drama with a large bow and train. Does the Venice Film Festival ever have to end?
Elizabeth Banks in Andrew Gn.
22 of 55
If there’s one thing Elizabeth Banks is not, it’s subtle — at least when it comes to the red carpet. The actress loves color, prints, and interesting silhouettes, and at the “Black Mass” premiere, she combined all three in an Andrew Gn gown. The black strapless number featured jungle flora in purple, red, and green, and she added a little Flamenco flair with her hair tightly pulled back and big turquoise earrings.
Joel Edgarton Ermenegildo Zegna.
23 of 55
Joel Edgerton, who plays FBI agent John Connolly in “Black Mass,” looked like every bit an actor — or model — in a superbly well tailored navy tuxedo from Ermenegildo Zegna.
Dakota Johnson in Valentino.
24 of 55
Dakota Johnson might play a gangster’s girlfriend from Boston in “Black Mass,” but in real life, she’s a glamorous actress who can pull off diverse fashions from demure and casual to sophisticated and super sexy. At a press conference for the new film, the “50 Shades of Grey” star wore a black Valentino dress from the Italian brand’s Resort 2016 collection.
Johnny Depp in a green blazer and linen trousers.
25 of 55
Did Johnny Depp slyly win the Masters and not announce it to anyone?! At a press conference for “Black Mass,” his new gangster movie that’s already getting Oscar buzz, the new face of Dior Sauvage (if you haven’t watched the commercial yet, prepare to be puzzled) wore a bright green jacket just like Tiger Woods’. He paired the blazer with tan linen pants and black and white brogues and left the man jewelry, except for a couple rings, at home.
Hailee Steinfeld in Miu Miu.
26 of 55
Hailee Steinfeld has been modeling for Miu Miu since she was 14. And at 18, she still proves to be a perfect fit with Miucca Prada’s designs. At a dinner hosted by the brand, Steinfeld paired a Barbie pink skirt with shiny sequins lining the pockets with a tribal-inspired red blouse.
Sia in Miu Miu.
27 of 55
Still wearing her signature wig, Sia accessorized her hair with multi-colored polka dots and added an oversized red bow. She matched the bow to her zig-zag heels and orange and red-striped sweatshirt dress.
Dakota Johnson in Miu Miu.
28 of 55
Before starting her promotional duties for “Black Mass,” Dakota Johnson, fashion’s latest celebrity darling, took time to celebrate with Miu Miu. In a white long-sleeved blouse with an embellished collar and black skirt, she added some sexiness to the charming school girl outfit with a lace-up pair of heels.
Elizabeth Banks in Elie Saab.
29 of 55
Since arriving in Venice, Elizabeth Banks has been spotted in five different outfits, and a majority of them have featured a floral motif. For the premiere of “Spotlight,” the actress stepped out in an Elie Saab gown with center slit that revealed her legs and Louboutins. The wind from the nearby canal also gave the cape, attached at the shoulders, a nice effect.
Hilary Rhoda in Kaufman Franco with Chopard Co-President and Artistic Director Caroline Scheufele.
30 of 55
The guest of Chopard at the Venice Film Festival, Hilary Rhoda dressed the part — very literally — in a gown seemingly entirely made of the precious stones the bling business is famous for. The Kaufman Franco number might be in a slip dress silhouette, but covered in diamonds, it’s certainly not as light.
Mark Ruffalo and Sunrise Coigney in Valentino.
31 of 55
Sure, Mark Ruffalo’s the star of “Spotlight” and looks great on the film’s red carpet in a Valentino tuxedo, but it was his wife, Sunrise Coigney, who was the real star. Also in Valentino, she shined in a gown covered in shooting stars, moons, and planets, from the Italian house’s Fall/Winter 2015 collection.
Stanley Tucci and Felicity Blunt coupled up at the “Spotlight” premiere.
32 of 55
While Emily Blunt’s the actress in the family, Felicity Blunt still knows how to work a red carpet with the best of them. The literary agent worked it in an emerald structured gown with a thigh-high leg slit. Her husband, Stanley Tucci, complemented her glamour in a dapper gray suit and sunglasses at night.
Sia in her signature wig.
33 of 55
Sia took her face-shielding act one step further by pairing her wig, which gives off the illusion that her front is actually her back, with a backwards jacket. Her feet might’ve been facing forwards, but the ensemble’s still completely and utterly confusing.
When it comes to age appropriate dressing, Hailee Steinfeld’s got it down pat. The 18-year-old, who recently covered up — and still looked cool — at the MTV VMAs in Stella McCartney, dressed in a Miu Miu ensemble that’s basically any girl’s dream first day of school outfit. The singer and actress, with the help of stylist Karla Welch paired a bright yellow snake print skirt with a ‘60s-era patterned blouse with an aqua collar.

Whitney Cummings in a leather dress and furry shoes.
35 of 55
Whitney Cummings could’ve taken her leather dress and furry shoe ensemble straight from a daytime step-and-repeat to a nighttime event, which she coincidentally did.
Elizabeth Banks in a white dress.
36 of 55
Carrying a coveted Mansur Gavriel cross body bag and rocking some neon mirror tinted sunglasses, Banks let her accessories do the talking as she paired them with a simple white dress with sheer hemline details.
Diane Kruger in Cushnie et Ochs.
37 of 55
Three outfits in one day, and they all ranged so wildly. From a Preen minidress to a Prada gown and then into a Cushnie et Ochs jumpsuit, Kruger killed it in all of them.
Diane Kruger in Prada.
38 of 55
For the jury member’s first black tie red carpet, Diane Kruger brought her A-game, nay A plus game. The actress was a vision in a white and sliver Prada gown, in a sheath-like silhouette with a high neckline and underarm cutouts. A patterned cape draped from the back of the dress, giving off major space Queen vibes.
Elizabeth Banks in Dolce & Gabbana.
39 of 55
Sure, from the front Elizabeth Banks’ a gown is just another white dress. But turn around, and it’s Dolce & Gabbana! The form-fitting white piece features a high neckline and short train with a bejeweled belt on the waist. The back has a large cutout that’s lined with black bows embellished with red and gold beads.
Jake Gyllenhaal in Salvatore Ferragamo.
40 of 55
It’s still summer in Italy, but Jake Gyllenhaal suited up for snow — possibly a nod to his new film “Everest” — in a velvet Salvatore Ferragamo tuxedo jacket. He paired it with a bowtie and slicked his hair back.
Paz Vega in Ralph & Russo.
41 of 55
The actress did chandelier chic right on the red carpet at the Venice Film Festival. (Miley Cyrus, on the other hand, took the lighting appliance-inspired look a little too far at the MTV Video Music Awards.) Paz Vega’s Ralph & Russo Fall/Winter 2015 2015 couture gown originally featured a tulle bustle, but Vega smartly did away withe superfluous fabric.
Josh Brolin and fiancé Kathryn Boyd attend the “Everest” premiere during the 72nd Venice Film Festival.
42 of 55
En route to the “Everest” premiere, Josh Brolin only had eyes for Jake Gyllenhaal as the co-stars goofed off in a gondola taking selfies and staging a photoshoot. But upon arriving on dry land, the actor turned his attention to his fiancé, Kathryn Boyd, who looked stunning in an emerald green chiffon number.
Franca Sozzani in primary color gown.
43 of 55
The Vogue Italia editor in chief, aka the Anna Wintour of Italy, brought boho to the black tie red carpet in a red, yellow, and blue printed gown.
Jason Clarke debuts blonde hair.
44 of 55
You might recognize Jason Clarke from “Zero Dark Thirty,” “The Great Gatsby,” and the recent “Terminator” remake — but only with brown hair. The actor debuted newly dyed blonde hair at the Venice Film Festival at the premiere of his new movie, “Everest,” wearing an expertly tailored black tuxedo.
Alessandra Ambrosio in a white bandeau dress.
45 of 55
In a dress that seems like the gown version of a cotton eyelet summer dress with a cutout and bandeau, model Alessandra Ambrosio had her Lupita Nyong’o moment twirling down the red carpet at the opening night of the 72nd Venice Film Festival.
Diane Kruger in Preen.
46 of 55
Diane Kruguer, who’s sitting on the Venice Film Festival’s main jury, set a really strong precedent for her first photocall of the 10-day event. Opting for flat ankle boots with mid-calf black socks over heels, she gave a pretty floral Preen dress an edgy vibe. “Can’t wait to get started…looking forward to see all films in competition and then some…amazing jury, making new friends,” the actress wrote on Instagram.
When in Italy, dress as the Italians do! Elizabeth Banks wore a Dolce & Gabbana floral dress from the designer’s Fall/Winter 2016 collection. The black and white floral dress, with an above-the-knee hemline and elbow-grazing sleeves, is also embellished with red poppies, yellow daisies, bows, and leaves. She paired the sheath with back stilletos from Stuart Weitzman with a bouquet little white flowers on the heel.

Jake Gyllenhaal boards a boat in a sleek suit.
48 of 55
In Italy to debut his new film “Everest,” based on a climbing expedition conquering the Nepalese mountain that goes awry, Gyllenhaal dressed very unlike his Patagonia-clad character in a gray suit, light blue button down shirt, and navy blue tie. He did keep his scruff though, and shaded himself from the summer sun in tortoise wayfarers.
Alessandra Ambrosio in Philosophy.
49 of 55
The Victoria’s Secret model, who’s #foreveronvacation, has spent her summer traveling Europe from Paris with Balmain designer Olivier Rouesteing to Ibiza for some yacht parties. Alessandra Ambrosio took a break from bikinis and was spotted in Venice wearing a royal blue and white crop top and midi skirt set.
Paz Vega in a little black dress.
50 of 55
Paz Vega proves that little black dresses can be fit for daytime too by pairing the tight knee-grazing piece with cheetah print Ferragamo flats and cat eye sunglasses.
Diane Kruger in Thakoon.
51 of 55
Now that’s how you make an entrance! Wearing quite possibly the chicest travel outfit ever, Kruger was spotted making her way from the airport to a waiting boat in a Thakoon bodysuit and matching skirt with a Janessa Leonehat and Komono sunglasses. The style star, who famously forgoes a stylist, packed all of her clothes in one carry-on, one checked bag, a hat bag, and a purse. Now that’s impressive.
Elisa Sednaoui in Alberta Ferretti.
52 of 55
The local Italian model and actress is one to watch out for. She’s hosting the Venice Film Festival, has appeared in campaigns for Chanel Eyewear, Giorgio Armani, and Roberto Cavalli, is a film star already in her country — Hollywood will surely be calling soon — and even has time for charity work. In a photocall for the movie event, Sednaoui took to the beach barefoot in a sheer Alberta Ferretti jumpsuit.
Elizabeth Banks in Splendid.
53 of 55
“Have arrived in Venice. 1st time here. Spending the next couple weeks watching movies at the Venice Film Festival. Ya’ll be sick of my Venice-infused Insta by the time this is over,” Elizabeth Banks wrote on Instagram alongside a photo taken from a canal. She arrived in the city wearing a blue and white jumpsuit, straw fedora, nude sandals, round sunglasses, and carrying both a tote and cross-body bag.
Mark Ruffalo in jeans and a collared shirt.
54 of 55
Debuting his new film “Spotlight,” based on the true story of how the Boston Globe uncovered the massive scandal of child molestation and cover-up within the local Catholic Archdiocese, Mark Ruffalo wore a plaid button down shirt and gray-washed jeans.
Elisa Sednaoui in Max Mara.
55 of 55
Elisa Sednaoui jumped on the matching separates trend in red flare pants and tank top. She even coordinated her satchel, a one shade deeper red, which she slung over one shoulder. The only things not in the same color family were her Van Cleef & Arpels necklace and cognac leather sandals.
With end of summer and the start of September, stars are trading in their bikinis for ballgowns in Italy. The 72nd Venice Film Festival kicked off on Tuesday with sartorial star Diane Kruger, Elizabeth Banks, and local stunner Elisa Senadoui sitting on the jury. With Everest, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Keira Knightley; Spotlight, with Rachel McAdams and Mark Ruffalo; Johnny Depp’s Black Mass; and A Bigger Splash, featuring Tilda Swinton, Ralph Fiennes, and Dakota Johnson; and more, expect big celebrities in grand fashions over 10 days in the City of Bridges.
