The Denim That's In & Out for Fall, According to Experts

The experts know best!
Cropped flares, high-rise flares, wide straight legs, and authentic washes are what’s in.

What Chloe Lonsdale, Founder & Creative Director of MiH, thinks.
In:
“Vintage fits in authentic washes with minimal whiskering are key for fall, and the Linda Jean is the perfect example of this. The higher rise and minimal stretch fabrication gives the jean a true classic denim fit and feel.” — Chloe Lonsdale, founder and creative director, MiH
Out:
?"The skinny jean is still a wardrobe basic, but it is no longer a seasonal must-have. People choose a skinny jean for a more casual, comfortable look, not to make a statement.“ — Chloe Lonsdale

What Scott Morrison, Founder & President of 3 x 1, thinks.
In:
"Fringe and flares are in for fall, and 3x1 has a couple of amazing versions hitting stores this August. We’ve created a fringe group using a laser to cut weft yarns from the denim, leaving only the indigo warp yarns dangling. I’m not sure it’s ever been done before, and the effect is nothing short of spectacular. We’re also making a bold statement with our mid-rise flare in ‘Alpha’ wash. It’s a a superstretch fabric that fits like a glove, in a clean, dark, soft rinse wash. It’s exciting to see how sexy and fresh the flare looks again!” — Scott Morrison, founder and president, 3x1
Out:
“Jeggings and jogger jeans. I’ve always hated both those concepts, and I’m very excited to see those trends blow over. Enough said.” — Scott Morrison

What Karyn Hillman, Chief Product Officer at Levi’s, thinks.
In:
“I see a couple of trends getting a lot of attention this season—namely a gradual return to 1970s flared jeans and the high-rise skinny. Both jeans are available in our new Lot 700, the 715 Bootcut and 721 High Rise Skinny. Our new women’s denim collection gives every woman a great shape across the top, waist, hips, and thighs in different fits and finishes. I wear a variety of jeans for each occasion—I’ll even wear jeans to a black-tie event!” — Karyn Hillman, chief product officer, Levi’s

What Tim Kaeding, Co-Founder and Designer at Mother, thinks.
In:
“It’s a unique time in denim, as nothing is really off trend. Although skinnies are not out, they’re not new these days. Straight legs are definitely popular—especially wide straight legs. Boots are just a smaller flare now. Some of the styles that are more notable are cropped and high-rise flares. The cropped flare styles are the perfect way to showcase your heels and sandals, and the high-rise flares elongate your legs and make your waist look slimmer. These are fresh silhouettes in line with the ‘70s fashion, which is so popular right now.” — Tim Kaeding, co-founder and designer, Mother

What Paige Adams-Geller, Founder and Creative Director of Paige, thinks.
In:
“I think the one trend that is definitely still in is the high-rise flare! I’m obsessed with our High Rise Bell Canyon in Joannie because it has just the right amount of edge, especially when paired with a leather moto jacket and vintage tee or plaid shirt.” — Paige Adams-Geller, founder and creative director, Paige
Out:
?“The denim style I think that is out for fall is the really tricked-out moto jean with intense seaming details at the knee.” — Paige Adams-Geller
