Hurrah, the final day of Fashion Month is here! And what better way to go out with a bang than the Louis Vuitton show, one of the most influential collections of every season. On this sunny Wednesday morning, artistic director Nicolas Ghesquière filled the Frank Gehry-designed Louis Vuitton Foundation with 32 tons of high definition screens — making you feel as though you were inside a video game, or as the designer referenced it, “a multi-dimensional digital canvas for a fantasy world.” They projected images of owls, digital motifs, and as the show started, a man talking in a robotic tone about unleashing the potential of your imagination. It was a trippy start (especially sans coffee), although there was nothing virtual about the impressive front row that included Catherine Deneuve, Grimes, Michelle Williams, Alicia Vikander, Kelela, Adèle Exarchopoulos and many more.
“I don’t know what to expect, I’m going to be surprised just like anyone else,” Williams, who has fronted the brand for a few seasons, told Yahoo Style upon walking into the venue. The actress, who flew into town just for this show, was thrilled to be there (“I always like being part of a family. It’s nice to have consistency and long relationships”) but was less inclined to discuss her cute new lob with bangs. “This is new-ish,” she said before adding with a laugh, “I don’t know what the hell it is.”
Following the show — which featured drool-worthy leather jackets, washed silk jumpsuits, flouncy crop tops (apparently in the virtual future we all get washboard abs, yay!), colorful minibags, slouchy satchels, cool booties, and thick-soled sandals — we snuck backstage to get the skinny on this brave new world from the A-listers on hand. Miranda Kerr already had her favorites in mind, “I love the use of metallics and leather,” she said. “Those cowboy boots were awesome. And those little crop tops. I’m excited to try a lot of the pieces on.”
“Do I have to do this in English?,” wondered Exarchopoulos, another face of LV. (Pardon, but yes!) “I am already projecting myself in a lot of pieces. I think each time he is creating a spirit. He’s creating heroines.”
Fellow actress Vikander is also one of the brand’s campaign girls, and after pinpointing her favorite looks on a mood board backstage, talked about the cinematic nature of Ghesquière’s work. “I told him that I really want to see the extended version [of all of this] because he combines the inspiration from films and video games…I just want to see the entire world be created,” she said. “He really at some point enter the film world to do a collection or make a film. I think he would be utterly qualified. Yeah, like a brilliant director!”
The it actress of the moment is receiving her own Oscar buzz for Danish Girl, something that she can’t quite comprehend.”It’s been a whirlwind wind this year. It’s exciting because these are films that I worked on almost two and a half years ago that are coming out this year. For them to finally be released out to the world to audiences is…well, that’s why you want to tell stories.”
With that she was onto the next person to standing on line to greet her. “Hey, cheers,” she said flute in hand. “I love a bit of champagne in the morning!”
