Realistically Proportioned Ken Doll Is Coming Thanks to Artist Nickolay Lamm
Before Mattel released their new line of dolls with tall, curvy, and petite models, artist Nickolay Lamm crowdfunded Lammily, an anti-Barbie with proportions based on the measurements of an average 19-year-old American woman. His project went viral — with subsequent efforts receiving mass amounts of media attention as well, including scar and acne stickers for the toy — and now he’s back, bringing the people what they want…again.
In January, following the announcement that Barbie would get a new body, many on social media suggested that her partner Ken should receive a similar makeover. Now, thanks to Lamm, this request might actually become a reality.
Launched on Wednesday morning, the campaign has already raised nearly $8,000 towards its $70,000 goal. The doll’s dadbod will be based on the average 19-year-old man. “He may not have a six-pack abdomen, but he has a fantastic sense of humor,” Lamm writes. "He may not have the roundest biceps, but he has his own trendy style. He may not look like a runway model, but he values himself for who he truly is, and always makes sure to pay the same respect to others!“
In a video, Lamm relayed an anecdote about his personal struggles with body image and dieting as a teenager. He also noted that while a lot of attention regarding this type of unhealthy behavior gets paid to women, men face similar issues. According to Common Sense Media, 33 to 35 percent of boys aged 6 to 8 admitted that their ideal body is thinner than their current body. Additionally, the action figures young men play with feature unrealistic muscles, with some toys even built bigger than the biggest bodybuilders.
