Oscars Burning Question: What’s in That Clutch?
The Academy Awards are almost upon us — and would-be winners, and those for whom it’s an honor just to be nominated, are getting ready to dazzle at the Kodak Theater.
We can already predict, fashion-wise, that we’ll spy a few head-scratching looks, and that true style A-listers like Meryl Streep and Michelle Williams will stun in custom gowns from major design houses.
But today, we’re here to dig into the stuff that truly boggles the collective mind. Like, what’s in that tiny bag most women carry on the red carpet? The rest of us tote handbags laden with keys, wallets, various beauty products, wipes, gum, phone, pens, snacks, a water bottle, books … we could keep going.
But on the biggest night of their professional lives, actresses downsize. Take the ever-popular Edie Parker brand, carried by Kate Hudson and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The measurements of the Jean style: 3 1/2″ H x 6 3/4″ W x 1 3/4″ D. Or consider the understated Celestina Patricia silver box clutch that winner Sandra Bullock paired with her Marchesa dress in 2010. Not much room there for anything but a very tiny good-luck charm.
If even that, Frank Fleming, who styles Keri Russell, tells Yahoo Style.
“It’s usually last-minute makeup — a lipstick and an eyeliner and that’s about it. Everything else goes to the handler. Sometimes they’ll have a cellphone, but it will usually go to the date or the PR rep. Keri doesn’t carry her tech. No one travels with a license, cash or any of that. There’s someone to take care of that for you,” says Fleming.
And that’s a good thing because — surprise! — unlike the Golden Globes, the Academy Awards have a cash bar.
Model/actress Olivia Culpo, who this year will be wearing a custom Marchesa dress benefiting Water.Org, breaks it down even further. “I always have a lip and a powder. But nothing else fits. And some gum and an ID and credit card,” she says.
