Natasha Lyonne on Meeting Nicki Minaj, Preparing for “Orange Is The New Black” & Why She Hates Spanx
“I think the experience of watching yourself on TV is mostly, like, you’re seeing what you did wrong and also why you’re an unattractive person,” Orange Is The New Black star, Natasha Lyonne, tells Yahoo Style’s Nick Axelrod. “It’s like, that was bad acting and I can’t believe anyone has ever slept with me.”
The 36-year-old New York native may not tune into Netflix to watch her character Nicky Nichols in the award-winning series, but millions of others are definitely keen viewers. The third season will be released on June 12, and Lyonne jokes that the time she spent behind bars years ago helped her get into character. Though there’s a handful of humor in the actress’s role, you may be surprised to learn that Lyonne doesn’t consider herself a comedienne: “I am not an intentionally funny person.”
She is, however, a fun person, and one who’s really enjoyed working with all women. Lyonne and her co-stars, Laverne Cox, Taylor Schilling, Uzo Aduba, and Laura Prepon, to name a few, make up an extraordinary cast. “There’s something about being with all women, that you’re an equal, it’s a very powerful thing,” she says. “Of course it makes you that much more creative and loose.”
Things that don’t make Lyonne feel creative and loose? Spanx. “Girls that are just like, ‘Oh my god. My Spanx!’ It’s like if I have to hear one more woman say the word Spanx out loud…that just doesn’t do it for me!” she says, laughing.

The front row fixture at New York Fashion Week can be seen next to style icons like Chloe Sevigny and Nicki Minaj; Lyonne sat next to the latter at Alexander Wang’s fall 2015 fashion show, and says her experience was “pretty comedic in it’s own way.” Watch this episode of Style Sessions to find out why!
