High School Senior Wants to Bring Grandma to Prom. School Says No.

A promposal by a senior at Eufaula High School in Alabama went off without a hitch — when he asked his grandmother to the big dance.

Although the move might seem strange to some, 18-year-old Bryce Maine had a sweet reason for the ask. His ‘Nanny,’ Catherine Maine, has never been to a prom, and he wanted to give her the opportunity to go to the dance at one point in her lifetime.

“I asked my Nanny to prom because she has never been to a prom before, so I figured why not let my last prom be with her,” he tells Yahoo Style. “I just wanted to give my nanny a moment that will last forever, and I believe that every woman deserves to go to prom some time in their life.”

To his dismay, not everyone was onboard with the promposal — including his high school.

The school will not allow him to bring his Nanny as his date because they feel it will make a joke of its date policy in the future, Maine’s cousin, Sarah Catherine, explained on Facebook.

“My blood is boiling right now…,” she posted. “My little cousin Bryce wanted to take our Grandma to his senior Prom since she has never been. Well after she done bought her dress and made plans, the principal decided that they cannot do that anymore… Like really?! Eufaula High School let my Grandma go to Prom!” She also attached photos of Bryce’s promposal and his ‘Nanny’ wearing her prom dress.

In an update to the post, Catherine added, “This has reached the board of education, and a teacher has called Bryce as well. They think if he takes Nanny to prom then future students will do it as a joke and make the school a mockery! And basically is wanting him to take this down.. It ain’t happening!”

The post was met with hundreds of comments, with users sounding off on whether or not Bryce should be allowed to bring his grandmother to prom.

Bryce’s father even weighed in on why Bryce should be allowed to bring Nanny to prom.

In a statement to WMC Action News 5 on its decision, the school shared a page from its student handbook on its policies for prom dates. “Attendees must be under the age of twenty and/or should be enrolled at EHS,” the policy read. The statement also included feedback from the school’s principal, Steve Hawkins.

“Safety of students and staff is the first and most important of the many tasks of a school administrator,” he wrote in the handbook. “For the 10 years I have been high school principal, we have denied requests each year from students asking to bring older dates to prom. We do not chance leaving any stone unturned when it comes to safety. Most high schools have an age limit for prom attendees.”

When Bryce learned of the school’s decision not to allow his grandmother to attend the big dance, he was extremely upset.

“I was disappointed and heartbroken when the principal told me I couldn’t, but as far as my classmates, about most of everyone including teachers were by my side backing me up,” Maine says. This support has led to a widespread social media campaign to allow Maine to bring his grandmother — with the hashtag ‘#letnannygotoprom’ trending.

It’s clear Bryce and his Nanny have a special bond that the school district can’t break.
