Amy Schumer Won’t Be Barbie After All

Late last year, rumors buzzed that Amy Schumer would star in Sony’s upcoming live-action Barbie feature. Deadline reported that the “deal was being finalized.” Now, just three months later, Schumer is dropping out of the production.

The changeup is due to her work schedule, according to E! News. Her official statement says as much: “Sadly, I’m no longer able to commit to Barbie due to scheduling conflicts. The film has so much promise, and Sony and Mattel have been great partners. I’m bummed, but look forward to seeing Barbie on the big screen.”

Sony confirmed the news in an equally friendly statement. “We respect and support Amy’s decision,” a Sony spokesperson said in a statement, according to E! News. “We look forward to bringing Barbie to the world and sharing updates on casting and filmmakers soon.”

Of course, this could easily fall into the “typical Hollywood” category: Celebrities are busy; perhaps Schumer simply found a better opportunity; she’s going to have a full calendar promoting her movie Snatched. But last year when the casting was announced, it was followed by a slew of body shaming. Is it any wonder Schumer wouldn’t want to play a character after being targeted with so much hatred the moment it was announced?

At the time, Schumer had responded to the haters with a bathing suit photo, all while acknowledging that the role wasn’t set in stone. “Very very honored to be nominated for 2 Grammys and to be considered to play an important and evolving icon. Is it fat shaming if you know you’re not fat and have zero shame in your game?” she wrote on Instagram. “Thanks to everyone for the kind words and support and again my deepest sympathy goes out to the trolls who are in more pain than we will ever understand. I want to thank them for making it so evident that I am a great choice.”

Clearly, Schumer would have brought to the role a layered perspective that we hope Sony still brings to the official casting. And when you think about it, what actress working today can carry Barbie’s decades of cultural weight onto the big screen? There’s one real choice, and we hope Sony makes the right call: Meryl Streep Barbie.
