Union Pines takes SAC 3A crown by topping SL
Oct. 5—A showdown of two nearby rivals in the Sandhills Athletic Conference took place Tuesday evening, as Union Pines nailed down the top 3A spot in the SAC with a 7-2 victory at Southern Lee.
The Lady Vikings (10-2 overall) dropped only the No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles matches. Union Pines is 9-1 in SAC play with only a close loss to Pinecrest, and a non-conference loss at Seaforth which was also competitive.
Southern's Carrie Ellen Bryan broke the run of Union Pines wins by knocking off the Lady Vikings' Bella Edwards 8-3. Bryan and Evie Eller later teamed up to beat Madelyn Ragsdale and Kinsley Creel 8-2 at the No. 2 doubles. However, Union Pines won everything else.
In the other singles matches, Tyne Ross blanked Kate Jackson 8-0, Abby Robertson downed Eller 8-1, Ragsdale beat Blaire Young 8-2, Ceilidh Clendenin defeated Logan Hickman 8-1, and Creel outlasted Gina DeCerbo 9-7.
The No. 1 doubles produced an 8-0 win for Ross and Robertson over Jackson and Young, while the No. 3 doubles was an 8-1 win for Clendenin and Lynn Yoxtheimer over Hickman and Brook Burrus.
Union Pines took on Pinecrest for a share of overall first place in the SAC Wednesday. This evening, Southern will host Lee County at 6:30 p.m.
