Sturgis tennis beats TR, ties Eddies
STURGIS — The Sturgis tennis team hosted Edwardsburg and Three Rivers on Saturday for a matchup.
The Trojans beat Three Rivers 7-1 and played to a 4-4 tie with the Wildcats. Edwardsburg beat Three Rivers 8-0. Most of the matches played on the day were pro sets, being played with the winner reaching eight points.
Sturgis is now 3-0-1 in dual matchups so far this season.
In first singles action, Sturgis' Rylee Carver won both of her matches. She beat Maggie Gose of Three Rivers 8-0 and Leah Stern of Edwardsburg 8-4. Katherine Steele won both of her matches at third singles as well, beating Lexie Page of Three Rivers 8-1 and Julia Lewis of Edwardsburg 8-2.
Gracie Perry beat Grace Lafferty of Three Rivers 8-0. She fell in her match to Julia Jones 9-7 at second singles. In fourth singles play, Ava Stewart finished 1-1 as well. She beat Natalie Moore of Three Rivers 8-1 but fell to Erin Letter of Edwarsburg 8-1.
Stern topped Gose 8-0; Jones beat Lafferty 8-0; Lewis beat Page 8-1 and Letter beat Moore 8-0.
In doubles play, the fourth team for Sturgis of Mya Eicher and Hannah Ritchie won both matches. They topped Three Rivers' team of Alyssa Jimenez and Kenzie Rennie 8-1 and the Edwardsburg team 8-5.
Katelyn Halling and Nghi Ngo also won both of their matches at third doubles. They beat Three Rivers 8-2 and took out the Edwardsburg team of Mara VanBuren and Verona Moody 9-8.
Arianna Terwedo and Chloe Clark fell in both matches at second doubles. Three Rivers' team of Lucy Olson and Lilah Zabonick by an 8-6 score and Abby Pryor and Mya Eberlein of Edwardsburg 8-4.
Johanna Rooyakkers and Bella Currier won a match over Three Rivers by default. They then played a three-set match with Edwardsburg, falling to Delaney Haradine and Ryleigh Reynolds by scores of 1-6, 6-1 and 5-7.
Back on Wednesday, Sturgis beat Niles 7-1.
The Trojans swept the singles matches with Perry and Stewart winning 6-0, 6-0. Carver won 6-2, 6-1 and Steele picked up a 6-1, 6-4 victory.
Terwedo and Clark plus Eicher and Ritchie both won 6-1, 6-1. Ngo and Halling earned a 6-3, 6-0 victory while Rooyakkers and Currier fell in three sets 3-6, 6-3 and 4-6.
The JV team beat Niles 10-2. Coach Jim Barfield said the team is beginning to play with more confidence and raising their levels on the courts.
Sturgis' JV won over Edwardsburg last week as well, 10-1. With this win, the team is now 3-0 on the season. Barfield said the team has quite a bit of spirit and the girls new to tennis are catching on.
"Everyone has something to show for their efforts. We really needed this match," Barfield said. "Now most everyone is looking forward to their next competitive match."
