Breitbart journalist files police report against Trump campaign manager for alleged assault

Breitbart News reporter Michelle Fields filed a police report against Donald Trump’s presidential campaign manager Corey Lewandowski on Friday.

The Washington-based journalist alleges that Lewandowski grabbed her by the arm and nearly threw her to the ground as she tried to ask Trump a question after his press conference Tuesday night at the Trump National Golf Club in Jupiter, Fla.

On Friday, the Jupiter Police Department released a statement confirming that it was investigating an alleged battery that occurred at that location on that date.

“A police report was filed with the Jupiter Police Department on Mar. 11, 2016, at approximately 10 a.m., and the investigation is ongoing,” the statement reads. “As with any investigation, specific details concerning criminal investigative information [are] not releasable while the investigation is considered active.”

Lewandowski took to Twitter to accuse Fields of being delusional: “@MichelleFields you are totally delusional. I never touched you. As a matter of fact, I have never even met you.”

The Independent Journal Review first reported news of the police report.

Later that day, aboard Air Force One, White House press secretary Josh Earnest condemned the escalating intimidation of journalists on the campaign trail.

“There is no excuse or justification for acts of violence against reporters who are covering a political event,” he said. "The White House, like many other people, including many Republicans, has been concerned about the invective and taunting that has been directed at journalists covering political events. It’s totally inappropriate.”

This is not the first time a confrontation between journalists and security at a Trump rally turned physical. On Feb. 29, a member of the U.S. Secret Service working the event choke-slammed a Time magazine photographer.

Fields explained in a short post on Breitbart Thursday that Trump had been happily fielding questions from other reporters when she asked about his view on affirmative action.

“Trump acknowledged the question, but before he could answer I was jolted backwards,” she wrote. “Someone had grabbed me tightly by the arm and yanked me down. I almost fell to the ground, but was able to maintain my balance. Nonetheless, I was shaken.”

Washington Post reporter Ben Terris told her that Lewandowski was the culprit as she saw him exiting the building. She said that Lewandowski would have been out of line even if Trump had finished answering questions.

“Campaign managers aren’t supposed to try to forcefully throw reporters to the ground, no matter the circumstance,” Fields continued. “But what made this especially jarring is that there was no hint Trump was done taking questions. No one was pushing him to get away. He seemed to have been happily answering queries from my fellow reporters just a moment before.”

After Thursday night’s GOP debate, Trump told a CNN reporter that he thinks Fields fabricated the story because Secret Service officers at the event said that nothing happened.

“This was in my opinion made up. Now I didn’t see anything. All of a sudden, we heard about it later on, but the Secret Service said nothing happened,” he said. “Everybody said nothing happened. Perhaps she made the story up. I think that’s what happened.“

Breitbart, which has been accused of having a pro-Trump bias, published an article Friday arguing that their reporter was indeed hurt in the incident but available evidence suggests it’s unlikely Lewandowski was responsible.

Fields could not immediately be reached for comment.
