Top Five: Educational Getaways
College can be a fun time but it can also be extremely stressful. Taking a break from the rigors of classwork and studying is important for our mental health. However, if you’re one that still yearns to learn and explore instead of relaxing on vacation, here are five places you may want to check out to expand your mind while enjoying your break.
Boston, Massachusetts
This list starts with the most historical city in the United States. From the Freedom Trail to sites that played key roles in the American Revolution such as the Old North Church the city is steeped in history. Located just minutes from the picturesque beaches of Cape Cod as well as an exact replica of the 1620 Mayflower on the shores of Plymouth. While there you can also stop by Plimoth Plantation, a living museum where you can experience life in the 17th-century. Once you’ve had your fill of history you can always take in a Red Sox game at the world famous Fenway Park.
Williamsburg, Virginia
If you can’t get enough of those living museums, head on down the east coast a little more and jump forward in time 100 years to check out how life was in the 18th century at Colonial Williamsburg. There you will find actors who recreate important historical events as well as a variety of demonstrations from craftsmen that range from brick-making to book binding. After you’re done living in the past you can visit nearby Busch Gardens featuring roller coasters, live broadway style shows and even animal attractions. Williamsburg is also the home of Water Country, Virginia’s largest water park.
Savannah, Georgia
Considered America's first planned city, Savannah is brimming with beautiful architecture and breathtaking beauty. Visit one of the incredibly ornate antebellum homes (some of which are plantation homes) built before the American Civil War or take a walk and explore the historic district and stop by the Telfair Museum of Art which was the first public art museum in the Southern United States. Outside the city but still nearby you can hit the beach and learn more about the environment and wildlife protection while watching sea turtles on Wassaw Island.
Sedona, Arizona
If you’re not familiar, Sedona is a desert town once regarded by Native Americans as sacred thanks to its unique rock formations of red-rock buttes and steep canyon walls. Surrounded by 1.8 million acres of national forest land, Sedona is an ideal spot for those who love hiking, biking and exploring nature's beauty. There are also plenty of different tour options via Jeeps and ATVs to explore with a professional guide or the more relaxed ones featuring wine.
San Francisco, California
This would not be a complete list of vacation destinations without at least one stop on the west coast. San Francisco is a city renowned for its cultural diversity and incredible beauty. From the iconic Golden Gate Bridge to the beautiful neighborhoods of Haight-Ashbury and the Mission District San Francisco is full of places to explore. You can take a tour of the intimidating Alcatraz Prison or stroll through the historic Fisherman’s Wharf all while basking in the sun of The Golden State.
