Kim Kardashian's Oscars dress named "the most important dress of the 21st century"
Kim Kardashian's gradual rise to becoming one of the most influential woman in fashion has been well-documented. Back in 2012, when Kim started dating Kayne West, Riccardo Tisci (then at Givenchy) began dressing her, after which, the industry started taking her seriously.
Fast-forward eight years later and Kim attends almost every major red carpet, regularly topping best-dressed lists around the world.
So, when it came time for the Keeping Up with the Kardashians star to choose her dress for the 2020 Oscars, it came as no surprise that she would, once again, pull out another iconic show-stopper.
But Kim's cream ruffled gown was more than just another vintage number.
The iconic 'Oyster' gown was designed by the late Alexander McQueen for the British designer's 2003 spring/summer collection.
Its significance as one of the greatest dresses in modern history was cemented in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's (MET) 2011 Savage Beauty exhibition, with curator Andrew Bolton saying that the gown is, "arguably the most important dress of the 21st century".
"It is made up of hundreds and hundreds of layers of silk organza, almost like a mille-feuille pastry," Bolton says of the design, which was inspired by a story of a shipwreck at sea.
"This particular dress, I think, is a real tour de force of the couture and is a great reference to the skills that McQueen learned at the ateliers at Givenchy."
Only two versions of the dress were ever made, one sits in the gallery of the MET and the other now belongs to Kim - a Christmas gift from husband Kayne.
"Kayne actually got me this for Christmas," Kim told Vanity Fair at the Oscars afterparty.
"I would always complain that I just want to make sure that I have something to wear and that I never feel that pressure. So, for Christmas he filled up my closet with some really vintage spectacular museum like pieces."
That's one hell of a Christmas gift if you ask us!
With this gown being just one of many vintage couture pieces now sitting in Kim's closet, we for one can't wait to see what the star wears next. We're feeling vintage Chanel at the MET Gala in May.
