Worker handling fireworks injured during Athens' Star Spangled Classic July 4 event

A worker for a crew handling Athens' Star-Spangled Classic fireworks show Saturday night was injured by fireworks, forcing an unexpected end to the display, officials said Tuesday.

The show was held at Athens-Ben Epps Airport, where the worker received a minor head injury "due to pyrotechnics," according to Athens-Clarke County Fire Battalion Chief Nate Moss.

"This individual was released from the hospital a few hours after the incident," according to a statement from Athens-Clarke Leisure Services.

The show ended after the mishap, according to Leisure Services.

Details of how the incident occurred have not been released by the city and Moss did not have that information.

No one answered a call to Zambelli Fireworks Manufacturing office Tuesday in Boca Raton, Fla., which handled the fireworks display and employed the injured person.

Firefighters who were already present for the fireworks display treated the patient, who had an "altered state of consciousness," according to Moss. National EMS transported the worker, whose condition appeared to be improving, to an Athens hospital, he said.

Leisure Services reported that it had safety measures in place that provided a quick response to the mishap.
