Woman saved from snowstorm, flown to Ohio for heart transplant
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A woman in need of a heart transplant was transported by police on a long, harrowing journey to a hospital in Ohio after getting stuck in the lake-effect storm that pummeled Chautauqua County this weekend, New York State Police said.
The 64-year-old was on her way to Cleveland Clinic from Rochester with her husband when the two got stuck on State Route 5 in the Town of Portland.
A nurse at the clinic contacted state police who located the couple and maintained continuous contact with them. The woman, who had a battery powered heart pump, was transported to the fire station, the hospital, and finally, the Jamestown Airport where she was flown to Cleveland Clinic.
The incident occurred on Nov. 29. Troopers said they assisted 111 disabled vehicles during the storm from Erie County to the Pennsylvania state line.
