Woman killed after SUV hit in suspected DUI crash
ELYRIA, Ohio (WJW) — A woman is dead after her SUV was struck in an intersection by a suspected drunk driver on Sunday, according to police.
The 50-year-old woman’s SUV was headed south on North Abbe Road, nearing the intersection of state Route 57, on Sunday, July 7, according to a news release from Elyria police.
At the same time, an SUV being driven by 41-year-old Joshua Thompson of Elyria was headed north on state Route 57, approaching the intersection.

Police were called to the scene just after 10 p.m.
Investigators learned Thompson drove through the red light at the intersection and the front end of his SUV struck the driver’s side of the woman’s SUV, according to the release. Thompson’s SUV flipped onto its roof.
The woman in the other SUV was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the release. Her name has not been released.
Thompson and his 41-year-old passenger were transported to a hospital with unknown injuries.

Thompson now faces a charge of operating a vehicle while impaired and is due for arraignment in Elyria Municipal Court on Tuesday morning. It’s his first offense, according to court records.
Authorities expect to file additional charges.
