Wisconsin woman killed, driver seriously injured in Merritt Island crash
A 60-year-old Wisconsin woman was killed Monday afternoon after Florida Highway Patrol troopers say the vehicle in which she was a passenger ran off the roadway and collided with a fire hydrant.
The deadly crash happened about 12:26 p.m. along State Road 3 — also known as Courtenay Parkway — and the Pine Island Road intersection. Troopers did not identify the woman or the driver, a 55-year-old man from Portage, Wisconsin, who was seriously injured.
It was the second reported traffic fatality to take place in Brevard in less than 24 hours.
Investigators said the woman, who was not wearing a seat belt, was the passenger in a 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander traveling northbound in the outside lane of Courtenay Parkway when the crash happened. Troopers said the SUV, driven by a 55-year-old man from Portage, Wisconsin, for an unknown reason ran off the roadway, hitting the concrete median before rolling across the southbound lanes and into the hydrant, troopers reported.

Paramedics treated the woman at the scene and transported her to Cape Canaveral Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The driver was also transported to the hospital. The relationship between the two was not immediately known.
An investigation is ongoing.
