A new group of celebrities will delve into their pasts with the help of some family tree experts as Who Do You Think You Are? returns to the BBC for its 20th anniversary year.

For two decades, Who Do You Think You Are? has kept audiences on the edge of their seats by reaching back into history and revealing some shocking, emotional and previously undiscovered secrets about its guests, leaving many just as taken aback as viewers.

Guaranteed to surprise, this much-loved series has quickly become one of a kind, attracting a range of big-name guests who are eager to uncover unseen aspects of their family history.

Here’s what we know about the series' impending return.

Who Do You Think You Are? will return to BBC One on Thursday, 15 August at 9pm with actor Vicky McClure as the first guest of its 20th series.

While unconfirmed, it’s likely that all of its remaining episodes can be found in this time slot for the foreseeable future. Those who miss the show live can watch it on-demand via BBC iPlayer.

Previous guests on this tear-jerking family-tree show include Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ian McKellen, Danny Dyer, Bruce Forsyth and Anita Rani. For the show’s 20th edition, a new batch of famous faces prepares to be shocked by what the show’s in-depth researchers might find.

Line of Duty and Trigger Point star Vicky McClure kicks the series off, learning about her grandfather's history as a Japanese Prisoner of War.

Elsewhere, comedian and presenter Paddy McGuinness traces his surname back to Ireland while learning about his own grandad's key role during World War II. Singer Olly Murs is delighted to discover his roots lie in circus performing, while former Spice Girl Mel C is faced with the painful story of how her family survived Ireland’s Great Famine.

Meanwhile, actor Rose Ayling-Ellis finds out how her personal history mirrors the pub-centric plot of an EastEnders episode, as reality star Gemma Collins comes face-to-face with a family member that she had no idea existed.

Olympic gold medallist Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill also stars, revisiting her family journey in Jamaica to find out how they went from slavery to becoming land owners.
