NEED TO KNOW
A new heat warning tool
As summer approaches, federal officials unveiled a new color-coded heat warning system called “HeatRisk,” which breaks down weather conditions and related health risks for any area of the U.S.
Why it matters: Last year was the hottest year on record globally, and heat is the top cause of weather-related deaths in the U.S. — more so than floods, hurricanes or tornadoes. [NBC News]
Health risks: The tool was released as the U.N. reported that more than 70% of the world’s workers face climate-related health risks, including exposure to excessive heat, UV radiation and air pollution. [CBS News]
How it works: Enter your zip code on the CDC’s dashboard and see heat forecasts, explanations of the health risks, air quality reports and tips to protect your health. [AP]

3 QUESTIONS
...about abortion attitudes
My colleague Andrew Romano, who has covered every presidential election since 2004, breaks down a new Yahoo News/YouGov poll on where voters stand regarding abortion policy.
Anthony: What were you looking for from voters in this survey?
Andrew: Arizona just moved to reinstate a long-dormant 1864 state law that would almost completely ban abortion. So where is public opinion now, post-Roe v. Wade?
Anthony: And what did you find?
Andrew: I reported that 56% of voters want Congress to pass “a law that keeps abortion as legal and accessible as it was nationwide under Roe” — an all-time high. Meanwhile, 62% of voters said they opposed Arizona reinstating the old law.
Anthony: What do these results tell us about the 2024 election?
Andrew: Biden wants a new federal law to restore the “protections of [Roe] in every state.” Trump wants states to keep making their own rules. Biden’s position is more popular than Trump’s.
What else did voters say? Read Andrew’s full report.
