UW System Board of Regents boosts chancellor pay, including some higher raises due to new salary ranges
The University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents approved three raises above the standard 2% for chancellors on Thursday.
UW-Milwaukee's Mark Mone, UW-La Crosse's Joe Gow and UW-Stevens Point's Thomas Gibson all received slightly larger than normal increases.
"The pay increases are designed to keep salaries competitive and to bring some salaries above the pay range minimum," UW spokesman Mark Pitsch said.
Chancellors at some schools did not receive raises because they are departing or were just hired.
System officials dramatically increased salary ranges for top leaders last December, creating more leverage in their searches for the next system president and next UW-Madison chancellor.

At that time, the Board of Regents unanimously approved boosting the system president’s salary range by almost 7%; the UW-Madison chancellor’s range by 21.7%; and the UW-Milwaukee chancellor’s range by 32%.
The regents also approved a 7.1% increase for other chancellors, a 5.5% increase for system vice presidents, a 5% increase for the UW-Madison provost and a 9.6% increase for the UW-Milwaukee provost.
The old salary range for a system president fell between $489,334 and $734,000. The new minimum will be $522,470 and the maximum $783,706. The old range for the UW-Madison chancellor was $493,240 to $739,860. The new range is $600,126 to $900,190.
New UW chancellor annual base salaries are as follows:
UW-Madison's Rebecca Blank: $618,278 (no raise, departing)
UW-Milwaukee's Mark Mone: $452,090 (7.52% raise)
UW-Eau Claire's Jim Schmidt: $279,673 (2% raise)
UW-Green Bay's Michael Alexander: $265,302 (2% raise)
UW-La Crosse's Joe Gow: $247,661 (4% raise)
UW-Oshkosh's Andrew Leavitt: $281,432 (2% raise)
UW-Parkside's Deborah Ford: $270,608 (2% raise)
UW-Platteville's Dennis Shields: $286,526 (no raise, departing)
UW-River Falls' Maria Gallo: $279,035 (2% raise)
UW-Stevens Point's Thomas Gibson: $265,302 (5.09% raise)
UW-Stout's Katherine Frank: $275,914 (2% raise)
UW-Superior's Renee Watcher: $270,608 (2% raise)
UW-Whitewater's John Chenoweth: $245,000 (no raise, newly hired interim)
UW System interim President Michael Falbo, who is bridging the gap between Tommy Thompson's departure and Jay Rothman's arrival to the role, has a base annual salary of $489,234, below the new pay ranges for system president approved by the board last year.
