3 QUESTIONS
...about drinking in the heat
Anthony talked to wellness writer Kaitlin Reilly about how to consume alcoholic beverages safely while in the sun — for those of you who are extending your holiday merriment into the weekend!
Anthony: What should people know before drinking in the sun?
Kaitlin: Good question. Spending time in the heat puts you at risk of dehydration, whether you're drinking alcohol or not. I spoke to experts who said alcohol's diuretic effects can make dehydration worse.
Anthony: What can you do to avoid dehydration while out drinking?
Kaitlin: I'd suggest three things: Show up well hydrated, avoid direct sunlight and, if you’re having more than one drink, pace yourself with a sports drink or water.
Anthony: What symptoms should you look out for to be sure that dehydration isn’t turning more serious?
Kaitlin: One doctor told me thirst, dizziness and a headache can be signs of heat exhaustion or stroke. If you have any of these symptoms and they're getting worse, you might want to consult a doctor.
Alcohol can also make it more dangerous to be near water. Here’s why.
