Truck driver sentenced for shooting at another occupied tractor trailer on I-90
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A truck driver has been sentenced to time in prison for shooting at another occupied tractor trailer truck on I-90 in Newstead last summer, the Erie County District Attorney’s Office said Monday.
Ohio resident Dylan Cottingham, 26, was sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison.
Cottingham fired multiple shots into the other truck near Exit 50 westbound, near Cheektowaga, on the morning of July 29. The other truck was occupied by a female driver, a female passenger and a 10-year-old girl who was sleeping in the truck’s cab. None of the three were injured, but one of the bullets came “very close” to the sleeping child.
Cottingham was initially charged with attempted murder, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, first-degree reckless endangerment, third-degree criminal mischief and second-degree menacing. He pleaded guilty to the weapon charge and the reckless endangerment charge on Dec. 13.
Cottingham had a valid pistol permit in Ohio, but was not permitted to carry the gun in New York.
After his release from prison, he will be subject to 2 1/2 years of post-release supervision.
