New Trader Joe’s in Clarence in the works, would be WNY’s second location
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Trader Joe’s in the Town of Clarence is in the works.
Benderson Development, a WNY company that has worked on several area projects, announced the plan to build the grocery store at 5017 Transit Road, the site of what was formerly an Applebee’s.
The Clarence Town Board referred the request to the Town Planning Board to review it. If the plan is approved construction on the store could begin as soon as this spring. If things go according to plan, the store could open by the end of the year. The store would be 13,500 square feet.
Clarence Town Supervisor Patrick Casilio said Thursday that he expects the plan to be approved “relatively quickly” and that construction could start in March.
The 1.3 acre parcel of land contains an existing building and a parking lot. In 2022 a Chick-Fil-A was proposed at the location, but that project was never approved due to an unresolved traffic pattern and flow issues. Instead, Chick-Fil-A moved forward with a location in Niagara Falls.
Trader Joe’s, the grocery chain known for its organic and gourmet food items, has around 600 stores across the country.
The Clarence location would be the second in Western New York, following a store on Niagara Falls Boulevard in Amherst that opened in 2013.
