Top 10 most searched male celebrities in 2018
2018 was a vibrant year for the entertainment scene, both locally and internationally. Yahoo Lifestyle Singapore rounds up the most searched male celebrities of 2018, what caused them to trend, and what they are up to in 2019.
JJ Lin
If homegrown Mandopop star JJ Lin selling out all four nights of his concert in the Singapore Indoor Stadium back in August is not an indication of his immense popularity here, then ticket scalpers reselling the tickets for up to 10 times the original prices online would further cement how in-demand the 37-year-old is.
Our homeboy is currently on his Sanctuary World Tour, and is concurrently a mentor on the Chinese variety show, Sound of My Dream 3.
Justin Bieber
The Baby singer has been dominating our headlines since his debut, from platinum-certified music releases, to his highly publicised on-off relationship with ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez, as well as his run-ins with the law. Justin Bieber is now off the market, being newly married to American model and television personality Hailey Baldwin.
Rumoured to be taking time off to enjoy his new marriage, Bieber had however recently reposted a young fan’s video and hinted of new music in the near future.
Andy Lau
Once again proving his unbeatable popularity in both the Cantopop and Mandopop scenes, the system for Andy Lau’s concert tickets sales jammed for hours as fans fought ticket scalpers to get their hands on one of the 60,000 tickets released earlier this year. Eight years since his last solo concert, tickets to My Love Andy Lau World Tour were resold online at nearly 11 times the original price.
This world tour came after the Hong Kong Heavenly King had to cancel a year-end concert at the Hong Kong Coliseum in 2017, having suffered from serious injuries from a horse-riding mishap during a commercial filming.
Ed Sheeran
British pop star Ed Sheeran will be returning to our sunny island for a one-night only concert at the National Stadium, his biggest in Singapore yet, on 26 April, 2019. The Shape of You singer had previously played sold-out shows in the Singapore Indoor Stadium (two nights in 2017), and Star Theatre (one night in 2015). To prevent ticket scalping, ticket verification will be done at the door at the request of Sheeran himself.
Singapore is among three Asia stops, alongside South Korea and Thailand, to have the Grammy winner grace their shores during his 2019 tour.
Jet Li
Actor, producer and former wushu champion Jet Li, 55, trended in May when a photo of him looking old and frail surfaced. Suffering from hyperthyroidism, the photo caused alarm amongst his fans, to which Li responded on his official Facebook page that he is doing fine and not to worry for him.
Born in Beijing, Li stayed in the United States for 20 years as a citizen before becoming a Singapore citizen in 2009.
Aaron Kwok
One of the Four Heavenly Kings that dominated the Mandopop charts in the 1990s, Aaron Kwok’s marriage with model Moka Fang in 2017, despite the 22-year age gap, jolted the singer-actor back into the limelight. Welcoming a baby girl into their lives in September 2017, it was recently rumoured that the couple will be welcoming their second child when Fang appeared at an event with a significantly bigger tummy.
Having released two movies in 2018 – Monkey King 3 and Project Gutenburg – Kwok is currently filming Theory of Ambitions, co-starring Tony Leung.
Jay Chou
Notoriously adorable in their comments on each other’s Instagram, Mandopop superstar Jay Chou and wife Hannah Quinlivan were spotted in Singapore in August, after Chou was seen alone at Founder Bak Kut Teh Balestier a day before. Along with JJ Lin, Chou had been spotted in various malls in Singapore this year, as well as in Johor Bahru’s City Square mall.
Having held a sold-out concert in January at the National Stadium, the Mandopop king had also headlined Singapore’s 2018 Formula 1 Grand Prix in September. Chou is set to co-star with Vin Diesel in the movie xXx 4.
Sylvester Stallone
Best known for his role as Rocky Balboa in the Rocky Series, Sylvester Stallone, 72, bid goodbye to his iconic character in Creed II in November when the film was released worldwide. Stallone had indicated that the baton has been passed to Michael B. Jordan, the franchise’s latest star.
Stallone will be starring as his other recognisable character, Rambo, in Rambo V: Last Blood with a script he co-wrote, slated for a 2019 autumn release.
Tom Cruise
56-year-old American actor and producer Tom Cruise is best known for his roles in hit movies such as Mission: Impossible, Top Gun, and Minority Report. The actor is also an outspoken advocate for the Church of Scientology, a controversial religious movement. He split with ex-wife Katie Holmes after Holmes’s insistence on shielding the couple’s daughter, Suri, from Scientology.
With six Mission: Impossible films under his belt, it is rumoured that Cruise already has plans for the seventh film, hoping to outdo the high bar set by this year’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout.
Henry Golding
Perhaps one of the most hyped movies of the year, Crazy Rich Asians thrust Malaysian host, model and actor Henry Golding into the international limelight with his role as Nick Young, starring alongside Constance Wu playing Rachel Chu. The 31-year-old has appeared on popular US talk shows such as The Ellen Show and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Since Crazy Rich Asians, Golding has starred in A Simple Favour, co-starring Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick. He is currently filming alongside Emilia Clarke for romantic comedy Last Christmas, slated for a November 2019 release.
