Survey collecting input on Savoy downtown area launches

SAVOY, Ill. (WCIA) — Plans for a downtown area in Savoy are inching closer and closer to coming to life.

The Downtown Development Group launched a survey for the public to share ideas with Savoy officials. Officials hope with the community’s input, the space will better reflect the community’s wishes.

Savoy moves one step closer to viaduct plan

Downtown Development Group CEO Marissa Siero says community members dream of turning an empty lot at the corner of Church and Dunlap into a spot for small businesses and restaurants. They want an open space to gather and just have an ice cream or coffee.

“So much of it is looking at building more restaurants and opportunities for small businesses to thrive in our community,” Siero said. “Also a central event space to make sure we can have gatherings. Whether that’s really fun music festivals or family movie nights, just different ways we can activate the community. There really is a rich culture here in Savoy and that’s something we want to make sure we’re highlighting.”

Siero also said the plan is to keep the oak trees currently there, and to not allow drive-thrus for any restaurant there.

The survey can be found here. Siero said the survey will be open for 2-3 weeks.

After the survey closes, the Downtown Development Group will talk with village leaders over the course of six months. Then officials will have a better idea of when construction could start.
