Street salting limited in Town of Tonawanda due to supply shortage
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Town of Tonawanda is cutting back on street salting following a supply shortage, as announced on social media.
The town says they will only be salting the main roads, intersections and stop sign locations.
The shortage is due to a “distribution and supply problem” by the town’s major salt supplier, American Rock Salt Company in Livingston County. A recent street salt order was supposed to arrive last week, but never did, the town said.
“We have about 1,000 tons of rock salt in our barns, which sounds like a lot, but it really isn’t when you consider that it takes about 250 tons to salt the entire town,” said Town of Tonawanda Supervisor Joe Emminger. “So hopefully it’s a temporary thing, a short term thing until we get our rock salt order in.”
Drivers are urged to use caution.
A salt shortage is affecting almost all area municipalities, according to the town, and some have asked the town to supply them with salt.
WIVB News 4 reached out to both North Tonawanda and the city of Tonawanda mayors, who said they’re not facing a salt shortage.
