Stores limiting egg purchases: A look at how many you can buy
National retailers and grocery stores are limiting egg purchases amid a shortage due to the bird flu outbreak.
Wegmans’ website currently allows customers to buy up to 10 cartons of a dozen eggs or 18-count eggs, with a maximum of 180 eggs. Walmart is reportedly limiting customers to two 60-count cartons per purchase, or a maximum of 120 eggs, “to help ensure more customers can have access to eggs.”
That may sound like a lot, but if you have a big family or love baking and breakfast items like omelets, eggs can add up fast.
Trader Joe’s, meanwhile, has the strictest limit: One dozen eggs per customer per day.
Other stores, like Aldi, BJ’s, Costco and Target, are limiting purchases to two or three cartons per visit, according to reports. Rules may vary by location.
The changes are largely due to avian flu, which forced farmers to slaughter millions of chickens. Stores are seeing more limited supplies, and the U.S. Agriculture Department predicts prices will go up another 20% this year.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, egg prices have nearly doubled over the past year, from $2.52 in February 2024 to $4.95 in January 2025. Prices appear to have risen even more sharply in recent weeks with prices listed at $5.49 for 12 large Grade AA eggs on Wegmans’ website and $5.46 at Walmart.
“With supply fluctuating nationwide, prices are rising due to avian bird influenza and strong demand,” Wegmans said in a statement. “Our New York state supplier takes every precaution to ensure its flocks stay healthy, and while prices will continue to shift, we are committed to keeping our prices competitive.”.
