All travel advisories lifted, state of emergency still in effect Wednesday
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — As the snow falls and windchills dip to dangerously low levels, officials encourage Western New Yorkers to keep an eye on the forecast and be safe.
See what to look out for when hitting the streets below.
State of Emergency
Governor Kathy Hochul declared a State of Emergency Monday for the storm that is expected to continue through Wednesday.
Travel will be difficult with poor visibility through Wednesday night. Wind gusts will reach 30 mph with a snowfall rate of 1-2″ per hour. Downtown Buffalo is expected to receive up to a foot of snow, with higher totals in the Southtowns.
The counties affected include Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Erie, Niagara, Orleans, Genesee, Wyoming and Allegany.
Extreme cold is also a threat. Windchills will dip as low as 0 to -25 degrees.
Buffalo Acting Mayor Chris Scanlon also declared his own specific State of Emergency for the city. Residents are urged to stay indoors if possible.
Street salting limited in Town of Tonawanda due to supply shortage
Road closures
The Buffalo Skyway is back open as of 9 a.m. Wednesday morning. It was closed Tuesday due to worsening weather.
Travel advisories
All travel advisories have been lifted as of 1 p.m. Wednesday. A travel ban in the Town of Brant and the Village of Farnham has also been lifted.
The City of Dunkirk has lifted their travel advisory as of 11:35 a.m. Wednesday.
Both Orchard Park and East Aurora lifted their advisories at 10 a.m. Wednesday morning.
Amherst’s travel advisory was lifted at 5 a.m. Wednesday and the Town of Tonawanda’s travel advisory was lifted at 6 a.m. Wednesday, spokespeople announced.
Closings
