September forecast: 90-degree days could continue into the start of fall
DENVER (KDVR) — Sept. 1 marked the start of meteorological fall, but the summer heat isn’t over yet as more 90-degree days, and maybe even higher, aren’t out of the question.
According to National Weather Service records, the month of September in Denver reaches an average of 63.4 degrees, but that hasn’t stopped some hot temperatures.
Denver isn’t all that cold in September
NWS said September is the fourth warmest month of the year. Especially in the past few years, Denver has seen temperatures highs in the 90s, and even over 100 degrees, throughout September.
Denver records second hottest summer in history
Many of these high temperatures were set in the past few years. Between 2019 and 2023, Denver broke several heat records in early September with temperatures ranging from 97 to 101 degrees, according to NWS. Meanwhile, September 2023 also broke the heat record for Sept. 30 at 91 degrees.
Despite these warm temperatures, the heat won’t stay.
Cool down is coming
While temperatures have been recorded in the 90s throughout the month, NWS said it should start to cool down. According to NWS records, the month starts with an average high of 84 degrees, and by the end of the month, the average high sits at 72 degrees.
Meanwhile, at night the low sits at 54 degrees at the start of September, and by the end, the average low is 42 degrees.
Denver weather: Warm, sunny before midweek showers
According to Pinpoint Weather Meteorologist Travis Michels, as the days get shorter, the temperatures will get cooler with a better chance of frozen precipitation at higher elevations.
As for Denver, that first winter freeze shouldn’t be on its way until October.
