Red Mass

Bishop Thomas John Paprocki, of the Diocese of Springfield, Ill., is to be the celebrant and homilist at a Red Mass at Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral on Saturday.

Toledo Bishop Daniel Thomas concelebrates.

The Red Mass, which derives its names from the color of the vestments worn by the celebrants, invokes blessings and guidance for judges, lawyers, law students, government officials and others affiliated with the legal community. It traces its roots to the 13th century, when it was timed to open the court terms for most countries in Europe.

This is the 15th annual Red Mass in the Diocese of Toledo, where it is sponsored by the local St. Thomas More Society.

The Red Mass is open to the public and begins at 5 p.m. Rosary Cathedral is at 2535 Collingwood Blvd., Toledo.

Life Chain

Life Chain is a public prayer event against abortion. Coordinated locally by the Foundation for Life, it is set for 1:30 to 3 p.m. Oct. 3 at four regional sites: Christ the King Parish, 4100 Harvest Lane, Toledo; St. Joseph Parish, 104 W. Broadway, Maumee; the intersection of Wooster and Main streets in Bowling Green; and the Defiance County Courthouse, 221 Clinton St., Defiance.

Participants are invited to pray and hold signs.

Life Chain comes amid 40 Days for Life, a coordinated campaign against abortion that includes vigils in front of local abortion providers. The Toledo campaign began on Wednesday.

Foundation for Life is also organizing its annual fund-raising reception, Benefit for Life, at the Hilton Garden Inn in Perrysburg on Oct. 13-14. Melissa Ohden, an author and advocate who was born following an attempted abortion, is slated to share her story as the guest speaker.

Benefit tickets, $60 for individuals, are available now through Foundation for Life.
