Proposed law would put moratorium on multi-family homes in Hamburg

HAMBURG, N.Y. (WIVB) — A proposed law in Hamburg would put a six-month moratorium on multi-family homes in the town.

The law was discussed by residents during a public hearing on Monday night. Residents opposed to the pause said the cost of living is already too high, more housing is needed and that it will bring jobs and investment into the town.

Residents who support the moratorium said that there have already been impacts to wildlife already and that the town is becoming a city with too much development going up too fast in residential areas.

“An extreme high density apartment building next to private homes is not wanted by homeowners for several good reasons do not let developers to continue to run this town,” one resident said at the hearing.

“The moratorium will deter developer interests in these sites and they will continue to express blight in the town my board members,” said Sean Doyle, the executive director of the Hamburg Industrial Development Agency. “I encourage the town to work with a broad group of constituents to promote productive growth.”

The Hamburg IDA said that if the moratorium is approved, it could result in the town losing out on state grant money. Residents also point out to the largely vacant McKinley Mall as a place where housing could go.

A one-year moratorium on the building of the homes was proposed on Monday’s meeting, but the proposal was not approved by the town board. It is still unclear if the town will entertain the six-month proposal.
