Photos: Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse
For Baltimore residents, the scene is difficult to believe: The Key Bridge collapsed.
A large container ship struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which spans 1.6 miles across Baltimore's harbor, early Tuesday morning.
The pillar couldn't stand up against the crash, sending that section of the bridge tumbling into the water. Cars could be seen crashing into the chilly waters below.
Eight workers fell into the water. Two were rescued, but six remain missing and are presumed dead. Authorities suspended the search mission Tuesday evening and planned to resume recovery efforts again Wednesday morning.
Meanwhile, the light of day brought the incident into vivid detail, as twisted steel rods from the bridge could be seen still wrapped around the container ship.
