Oscars 2024 live: Emma Stone, Sydney Sweeney and Kim Kardashian show off glam looks at lavish afterparty

The 2024 Oscars was a glittering night that saw Oppenheimer and Poor Things win big while Killers of the Flower Moon went home empty-handed.

The Academy Awards, which aired in the UK on ITV, were once again hosted by late-night titan Jimmy Kimmel. In his opening monologue, the host took aim at Sony’s Madame Web, disgraced French actor Gerard Depardieu and Oppenheimer nominee Robert Downey Jr.

Among the performers was Ryan Gosling who stunned the audience with his typically vibrant rendition of “I’m Just Ken” from Barbie.

One of the most talked-about moments of the night came when John Cena took to the stage totally naked in a streaking skit gone awry with Kimmel.

Then, after the ceremony, the celebrities headed to the Vanity Fair Oscar Party to let their hair down and bask in the end of another glitzy awards season.

Why wasn’t Wes Anderson at the Oscars?

Director and filmmaker Wes Anderson won his first Oscar last night for his best-live action short film, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, based on the late author Roald Dahl’s short story of the same name.

Anderson, however, wasn’t able to make the awards show, as he is currently in Germany filming for his next movie, The Phoenician Scheme, which stars Michael Cera, Benicia Del Toro and Bill Murray.

“If I could have been there, I (along with Steven Rales) would have said “Thank you” to: the family of Roald Dahl, the team at Netflix, Benedict and Ralph and Ben Kingsley and Dev and Richard and Bob and Adam and Jeremy and John and Jim and Rich and Jim and Polly and more,” the 54-year-old said in a statement.

“And also I would have said: if I had not met Owen Wilson in a corridor at the University of Texas between classes when I was 18 years old, I would certainly not be receiving this award tonight – but unfortunately Steven and I are in Germany and we start shooting our new movie early tomorrow morning, so I did not actually receive the award or get a chance to say any of that.”

Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel has revealed that he was told not to read out Donald Trump’s criticism of the ceremony live on air.

During last night’s Oscars, which saw Oppenheimer and Poor Things both win big, Kimmel read aloud a statement posted by Trump on his social media site Truth Social in which the former US president attacked the presenter’s hosting abilities.

“Has there EVER been a WORSE HOST than Jimmy Kimmel at The Oscars,” Trump wrote. “His opening was that of a less than average person trying too hard to be something which he is not, and never can be…Also a really bad politically correct show tonight, and for years – Disjointed, boring, and very unfair. Why don’t they just give the Oscars to those that deserve them. Maybe that way their audience and TV ratings will come back from the depths. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Speaking to ExtraTV ahead of her second Academy Award win, the pop star, 22, shared the text her friend sent her after she received her second nomination.

“She was like, “If you win you’re gonna be halfway to EGOT...’ and I was like ‘Girl, I have one. I love you babygirl, but I have one,” Eilish recalled.

The “Ocean Eyes” singer made history as the youngest person to win two Oscars. She won the first award in 2022 for Best Original Song for the title song of the 2021 James Bond movie No Time to Die.

Meanwhile, Eilish has won nine Grammys. Therefore, she will have to win an Emmy and a Tony to earn EGOT status.

According to the official Vanity Fair writeup of the Oscars afterparty, Paul Giamatti was elated at not having to go to extra measures for a bite to eat.

After the Golden Globes in January, the Best Actor nominee had to drive himself to In-and-Out Burger to grab a double-double with onions. However, at the annual magazine event on Saturday, the attendees’ hunger was predicted and there was a tray of burgers ready and waiting on arrival.

Emma Stone seemed visibly shocked when Michelle Yeoh announced her as the Best Actress winner at Sunday’s Oscars.

Though Stone’s performance in Poor Things as a woman brought back to life with a baby’s brain is one of the season’s most praised, Lily Gladstone was the favourite to take the Oscar home, for her performance as a Native American woman grieving her family in Killers of the Flower Moon.

Gladstone’s win would have marked the first time a Native American woman had won a Lead Actress award at the Academy Awards. Yet, Stone racked up her second Oscar win, following her 2017 success with La La Land.

According to The Independent’s film critic Clarisse Loughrey, Stone’s win wasn’t the right call.

“She’s a fabulistic creation, given flesh-and-blood relatability through Stone’s contributions,” she wrote of the Poor Things protagonist, Bella Baxter.

Robert Downey Jr closed out an awards season full of wins by scoring the Best Supporting Actor award at Sunday’s Academy Awards.

As well as thanking his wife, Susan Downey, the Oppenheimer actor reflected on what his involvement in the atomic bomb epic meant to him.

“Here’s my little secret: I needed this job more than it needed me,” he said. “Chris [Nolan, the director] knew it, [producer Emma Thomas] made sure that she surrounded me with one of the greatest cast and crews of all time.”

However, some viewers have claimed that Downey Jr’s speech contained a swipe at Marvel, for whom he played Tony Stark / Iron Man in several projects.

During her Best Lead Actress acceptance speech, an emotional Emma Stone took a moment to acknowledge her family for their support and love – and even squeezed in a Taylor Swift reference.

“I really just want to thank my family, my mom, my brother, Spencer, my dad, my husband, Dave. I love you so much,” she said. “And most importantly, my daughter, who’s gonna be three in three days and has turned our lives technicolour.

“I love you bigger than the whole sky, my girl. So thank you so much.”

The last line is a reference to a lyric from Swift’s song “Bigger Than the Whole Sky”, which features on her 10th studio album Midnights (3am Edition).

“If you look at the work of Non-Proliferation that is being done by individuals and organisations since 1945, there has been a reduction in the number of nuclear weapons on the planet since 1967 of almost 90%.

The trio, who were all nominated for Best Actress, shared an emotional group hug during a commercial break at the 96th Academy Awards. “Yes, they sewed me back in,” she confirmed. “Right when I came back, they sewed me back in, which was wonderful. I generally do think I busted it during, ‘I’m Just Ken.’

“I was so amazed by Ryan and what he was doing, and that number just blew my mind. And I was right there, and I just was going for it, and, you know, things happen.”

The biggest night in film finally arrived, with the 2024 Oscars bringing an end to this year’s awards season.

It was a night of fierce competition with Oppenheimer, Poor Things, and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon leading the tally of nominations, earning 13, 11, and 10 nods respectively.

As expected, though, Christopher Nolan’s atomic bomb epic cleaned up, with Nolan, Murphy, and Robert Downey Jr all earning their first ever Academy Awards thanks to their involvement in the film.

Other big winners of the night included Yorgos Lanthimos’s Poor Things, which took home four prizes including Best Actress for Emma Stone.

During tonight’s Oscars, Kimmel read aloud a statement posted by Trump on his social media site Truth Social in which the former US president attacked the presenter’s hosting abilities.

“Has there EVER been a WORSE HOST than Jimmy Kimmel at The Oscars,” Trump wrote. “His opening was that of a less than average person trying too hard to be something which he is not, and never can be.” In response, Kimmel joked: “Isn’t it past your jail time?”

Unusually, this is not the first time Trump has gone after the Oscars.

In her speech, Stone thanked her family, including her parents, her brother, and her husband Dave McCary. “I love you so much,” she said. “And, most importantly, my daughter, who’s gonna be three in three days and has turned our lives technicolor. I love you bigger than the whole sky, my girl.”

The last line is in fact an interpolation of a lyric from Swift’s song “Bigger Than the Whole Sky”, as featured on the album Midnights (3am Edition).

Stone and Swift are known to be friends in real life, with the pair having met when they were both teenagers.

Fans have widely interpreted the song as being written about grief or the loss of a loved one, with many theorising that the song is about miscarriage.

As Stone walked up to the stage to accept the Oscar, she gestured to her back, before making her way to the microphone stand.

“Oh boy. Um, my dress is broken,” Stone said, as she addressed the audience, while turning around to show the style mishap. “I think it happened during ‘I’m Just Ken’. I’m pretty sure.”

The Independent’s film editor Adam White was not a fan of Kimmel’s fourth outing as Oscars host.

“Kimmel wasn’t – despite Donald Trump’s assertion, posted to his social media site Truth Social mid-show – the worst Oscar host ever,” he writes.

“But his opening monologue wasn’t especially funny, inspiring light titters rather than belly laughs. But it fit a melancholy ceremony nearly derailed by a protest right outside the venue, and an industry uncertain about its own future.”

Rounding out the night as its biggest winners were Christopher Nolan and Oppenheimer.

One person who will be pleased is my colleague Louis Chilton who wrote a pre-emptive explainer on why the film was a worthy winner of the Best Picture gong.

“There’s much to admire about Oppenheimer,” writes Chilton. “A structurally complicated work, the film flits between three timelines: Oppenheimer’s early life and the development of the atom bomb; a 1954 security hearing in which Oppenheimer gets a calamitous grilling; and the 1959 US Senate confirmation hearing of oily politician Lewis Strauss (Robert Downey Jr).

“... But it’s also a film with something big and significant to say – and, even more importantly, it’s somehow managed to get people to listen.”

Cillian Murphy wins Best Actor

In what seemed like a dead cert, Cillian Murphy has won Best Actor for his eponymous role as Robert J Oppenheimer.

“It’s been the wildest, most exhilarating, most creative journey we’ve been on,” he told the audience. “All my fellow nominees, I remain in awe of you, truly. I’m a very proud Irish man standing here tonight.

“We made a film about the man who created the atomic bomb, and for better or for worse, we’re all living in Oppenheimer’s world – so I’d like to dedicate this to the peacemakers everywhere.”

Decades before he became an Oscar winner for his performance in Oppenheimer, the Irish actor was one of a group of “goofy teenagers” trying to make it as rock stars. Backstage at the Oscars, The Independent asked Jennifer Lame whether she struggled to keep up with the pace of Oppenheimer, which viewers will know moves rapidly through the atomic bomb creator’s life.

She confirmed: “Yes, it was a struggle! And I never wanted it to feel too quick, so I hope it didn’t feel too quick!

“All the performances were incredible, everything Chris shot, his script was incredible and I wanted it all to be in there. And I wanted everyone to enjoy it as much as I enjoyed it when I read that script.

“I didn’t want it to feel too rushed so that was obviously an incredible challenge that Chris and I worked together on so hard every day. It means so much to me that so many people came out and watched this film and told me they didn’t think it was too long even though I know it’s almost three hours!”

Viewers of the 2024 Oscars ceremony claim to have spotted a coded dig at Marvel in Robert Downey Jr’s acceptance speech.

In his speech, Downey said: “Here’s my little secret: I needed this job more than it needed me. Chris [Nolan] knew it, [producer Emma Thomas] made sure the she surrounded me with one of the greatest cast and crews of all time.”

Downey Jr previously appeared to aim a slight at his Marvel past while accepting an award at the Baftas last month.

Oscar nominee Sandra Hüller was one of multiple stars brought to tears by Jonathan Glazer’s emotional Oscars acceptance speech.

Glazer’s harrowing drama, The Zone of Interest, about Auschwitz’s commandant, won Best International Film, becoming the first UK movie to win in that category. Accepting his prize on stage, Glazer spoke about Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza.

“All our choices were made to reflect and confront us in the present – not to say, look what they did then, rather look what we do now,” he said.

“Our film shows where dehumanisation leads at its worst.”

The Blockers actor and former wrestler was introduced by ceremony host Jimmy Kimmel in a skit that preceded the award presentation. Kimmel began by mentioning the fact that it had been 50 years since a streaker invaded the stage at the 46th Academy Awards ceremony in 1974.

“Can you imagine if a nude man ran across the stage today? Wouldn’t that be crazy?” Kimmel asked, while behind him, Cena peeked out from behind the set dressing.

The pair then bickered over whether or not they were going to go through with “the streaker bit”, as Cena feigned reluctance.

Eventually, however, he emerged from the wings of the stage, with only the winner’s envelope covering his privates from view. “Costumes are…so important,” he said.

Backstage at the Oscars, a representative from Studio Ghibli shared a statement after Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron won Best Animated Feature.

“We would like to apologise that the director and the producer could not be here today. Please forgive them, they’re kind of up in the age bracket,” the representative said.

He went on to read a statement out from producer Toshio Suzuki: “We’re very honoured to receive the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. I would also like to give my thanks to those who were involved in the production of the film and those who worked to distribute the film worldwide.

“This film began with the retracting of the retirement statement that Miyazaki made. Following that, we spent 7 years making this film. It has been 10 years since Miyazaki’s previous film, The Wind Rises, during which time there has been dramatic changes in the filmmaking environment. This was a truly dramatic project to bring to fruition. I am very appreciative that the work that was created after overcoming these difficulties has been seen by so many people around the world.

“I am grateful to receive such an honour at my age.”

Many people, including The Independent’s film editor Adam White, thought that Oppenheimer was a safe bet in the Best Adapted Screenplay category.

However, it was Cord Jefferson, not Christopher Nolan, who took the award on the night for his sharp satire on Black stereotypes, American Fiction.

In her four-star review for The Independent, Clarisse Loughrey writes: “Jeffrey Wright earns his Oscar nomination within a minute of American Fiction. His wearied author and lecturer, Thelonious ‘Monk’ Ellison, has written out the N-word in reference to a famous Flannery O’Connor short story, and a white student voices her objection to it.

“Monk’s shoulders slump, his features crumble. You catch the millisecond he has to readjust himself, swallow down the truth, and offer his most courteous reply. ‘I got over it,’ Monk says. ‘I’m pretty sure you can, too.’”
