New Orleans residents clean up from Hurricane Francine
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — In New Orleans, Hurricane Francine tore through neighborhoods surrounding Lakeshore Drive. The intense rain and wind left behind pools of water and branches strewn across streets.
“It was fast and furious,” resident Bobby Bateman said. “It seemed like the rain just started coming in really quick, and we didn’t actually get the water rise until about 9 p.m., and then it went way up.”

Areas with substantial flooding were dry by the next morning, though thousands woke up without power. The Sewerage and Water Board asked the public to limit their water use for washing dishes, laundry and showers.
“There’s a lot of street flooding,” neighbor Anthony Vojkovich said. “But thankfully, my house still had power, it never went off. The reason is, my wife is not here, she’s in Texas. So, if she’d been here, power would’ve gone off.”
“The water came really quick. What happens is these back up and the one in the front there, and so it just rises right in the middle. And so, the whole intersection is full. And I mean, it was probably up to my steps over there in the front of the house,” Bateman said.
Residents spent the day bagging up branches and leaves, and clearing out neighborhoods.
“This whole area was completely underwater, and the water came up to my steps. So, most of us had our cars up on the neutral ground because of that, as you can see right here, it’s still got the water, so we’re grateful that the pumps were able to get all the water out this morning.”
