Orleans County to light up courthouse for correction officers
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Orleans County Courthouse will be lit blue over the next week to show support for correction officers, according to the Orleans County Legislature.
“These are very troubling times in our state’s prisons and we are very concerned about the safety of our corrections officers,” said Orleans County Legislature Chairman Lynne Johnson. “These corrections officers are our family members, friend and neighbors and we want them to know how much we appreciate them.”
NYS correction officers strike on day 8 as mediation talks begin
Officers across the state have been striking since Feb. 17 to reverse the HALT Act and get rid of overtime mandates. They have also called for mail scanning and body scans for visitors.
A temporary restraining order was granted Wednesday after the strikes were deemed illegal by the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, also known as DOCCS.
“Corrections officers at both the state and county are an integral part of our criminal justice system, keeping our community safe by maintaining order inside the walls and preparing inmates for future release back into society,” Johnson said. “By lighting the courthouse dome blue, we want to send a message to them that they are in our thoughts and prayers.”
