OKCFD celebrates one year of Safe Haven Baby Box

The box was installed in July of 2023 at Fire Station 21 and provides a safe and anonymous way for parents to surrender newborns.

“With the installation of the Safe Haven Baby Box at Fire Station 21, parents now have a discreet and secure method to surrender their infants, ensuring that they are protected and receive the care they deserve,” said Chief Scott Douglas in a press release.
The climate-controlled box is located on the northeast exterior and has motion sensors and a silent alarm for quick response. The baby box is first of its kind in Oklahoma, and two more are scheduled to be installed.
Officials say under the state’s Safe Haven law, parents can safely surrender their unharmed babies up to 30 days old without prosecution.
According to OKCFD, the box has not been used since its installation.
