Much of the U.S. is experiencing historic heat. What are the hottest days on record in Athens?

While it’s been a hot and humid summer throughout the U.S., record-high temperatures in Athens are (thankfully) well above recent daily highs.

So what are the hottest days on record in the Classic City?

Athens saw some of its highest temperatures on record more than 10 years ago, with the weekend of June 28 to July 1, 2012 reaching 107-109 degrees. Most of the hottest temperatures recorded in Athens occurred decades ago in the 1920s and 1930s.

Here is a look at the top 10 hottest days of the year, from highest to lowest, according to the Extreme Weather Watch website that pulls its data from the National Oceanic Atmospheric Association (NOAA).

2023 record heat around the U.S.

Excessive heat has scorched much of the U.S. in 2023 with temperatures and heat indexes rising over 100 degrees. The National Weather Service said in July that record highs were possible from the Four Corners states and Texas to the Lower Mississippi Valley and South Florida.

The southwest experienced some of the most treacherous temperatures so far. Arizona, for example, recorded temperatures at 110 degrees in mid-July with weather experts predicting that they will not get a cool break anytime soon.

In July alone, more than 113 million Americans were under some form of heat alert, the National Weather Service said. The alerts, which include excessive heat warnings and heat advisories, stretched some 2,000 miles from Oregon to Louisiana, according to USA TODAY.

Locations including Phoenix and Las Vegas, which were both under excessive heat warnings, could each challenge all-time record highs, AccuWeather said, as temperatures soar above 110 degrees.

The South also felt heat wave effects in mid-July. Heat warnings and advisories were in effect for more than 90 million Americans as record-breaking temperatures swept across the South with little relief in sight, according to USA TODAY.
