MLK Park greenhouse receives $1.5M grant to fund restoration Kayleigh Hunter-Gasperini

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A $1.5 million grant has been secured to restore the greenhouse at Buffalo’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, Senator Sean Ryan announced Tuesday.
Thousands of plants and flowers are grown annually in the 116-year-old structure.
Officials said the greenhouse will become “a hub for workforce development and more.” The first phase of construction, costing $8 million, will bring the aging structure up to code for community use. Empire State Development will be funding the bulk of the project.
Around $30,000 in state funding will also be going towards the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy (BOPC).
“The work done by the staff at the MLK Park greenhouse is a huge part of what makes Buffalo’s world-class Olmsted parks, parkways, and traffic circles so picturesque and inviting,” Ryan said in a statement. “This funding will allow BOPC to upgrade the 116-year-old greenhouse to ensure Buffalo’s beloved Olmsted park system retains this important resource and community asset for generations to come.”
