3 QUESTIONS
...about baking a good pie
In honor of Pi Day, I asked Yahoo Shopping writer Britt Ross, who’s also a pro baker, for some baking ideas.
Note: When you buy through links in this article, Yahoo may receive compensation.
Divya: I’ve never made a pie. Which beginner-friendly recipes would you suggest?
Britt: Making homemade pie crust gives a lot of bakers anxiety (it’s finicky!), so start out with something simple, like a graham cracker or crushed-cookie crust. Two easy pie recipes that call for this type of crust: creamy peanut butter and key lime.
Divya: What’s the secret to making these pies good?
Britt: Many pies, like the ones above, require “blind baking” your crust, meaning baking the empty crust before adding your filling. This gives your crust a head start to crisping up so it doesn’t become soggy once the filling goes in.
Divya: What kind of baking supplies should someone have on hand to make a pie?
Britt: If you’re making pie dough, you’ll want a rolling pin — I like a tapered French rolling pin for better control. I also always use a metal pie tin; it’s durable, won’t shatter if it goes from freezer to oven and conducts heat well.
One underrated tool: A bench scraper for cubing butter and lifting dough, Britt says.
FEEL-GOOD MOMENT
A 4-year-old boy in Wisconsin recently called 911 to complain that his mom was being “very bad” and needed to go to jail. When the cops arrived, they discovered her crime: She’d eaten his ice cream. See the cops surprise the boy the next day with ice cream. [People]P]
Have a great weekend. See you Monday!
