This Middleboro company gives a veteran a free roof every year. Here's how it could be you
MIDDLEBORO — James DelPrete said watching veterans shed a tear as their roof is finished is one of the many joys of owning a business that gives back to those in need.
It was 7 years ago when Middleboro-based Beantown Home Improvements started donating a new roof to a veteran each year. DelPrete, the business owner, called it a "blessing."
DelPrete is a third-generation contractor, and his business specializes in beautifying the exterior of homes, from the roof to the siding and doors.
"Growing up, I was always patriotic and almost enlisted in the Army. I think we don't take as good care of vets as we should, and I wanted to give back to them," he said.
Operation Payback awards a new roof for free to an American veteran by just simply applying on their website. There are some terms and conditions, including being in active duty, reserve or having been honorably discharged from the military.
Veterans must also live in Plymouth, Bristol or Norfolk County and have a valid military ID.
How to apply for a free roof
The winners will be chosen at noon on Oct. 31, and you can apply by visiting beantownhi.com/payback.
"We encourage every veteran in the area to apply, and if you didn't win this year, there's always next year, so keep applying," DelPrete said.
Beantown Home Improvements prides itself on elevating people's lives through their homes.
"First and foremost, we're a company that supports the veterans, and we value them so much for everything they've given up for us, and we want veterans to know we appreciate their sacrifices. That's major for us," marketing coordinator Heather Demita said.
The family business donates to dozens of charities in the area and plans to expand Operation Payback to help more veterans secure a new roof in the future.
"It's been a good year for us, and we plan to do more," DelPrete said.
