New Mexico Attorney General urges federal lawmakers to require social media warning labels
NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – New Mexico’s Attorney General is calling on federal lawmakers to require surgeon general warnings for social media. Raúl Torrez joined 41 other colleagues in a letter to Congressional leadership saying social media platforms have fueled a mental health crisis among young people.

It comes months after U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said warnings about the dangers are needed like the ones on cigarettes. “I would like a very clear identification of the potential harm: the risk of anxiety, the risk of depression, the potential for increased suicidal ideation, the fact that someone could be subject to sexual predation,” said AG Torrez.
Torrez said a warning could appear on an app store before the platform is downloaded on a device.
