Melania Trump is to headline Log Cabin Republicans event at Mar-a-Lago
Melania Trump is expected to step into the political spotlight again at an event Saturday night at Mar-a-Lago.
Trump, who has been absent from her husband's campaign rallies and court appearances, is scheduled to headline an event hosted by the Log Cabin Republicans, a conservative gay rights organization. The former president addressed the group at their December 2022 gala, also held at his Palm Beach club.
The 2024 presumptive Republican presidential nominee has elicited criticism from LGBTQ+ advocates, however, for often ridiculing transgender athletes in his rally speeches. At one event in West Palm Beach last fall, he said the former first lady did not like when he performs a particular "routine" — one in which he mocks a transgender weightlifter — saying she told him it was not presidential.
As for Saturday's event, the former first lady told Fox News Digital that "individual freedoms" defines "our American way" ahead of the Log Cabin gathering.
"We must unite in our effort to establish a society where equality is the everyday experience of every American," Fox News Digital quoted her as saying. "Individual freedom provides a unifying set of principles, and ultimately establishes our American way."
The story also quoted her saying: "Together, we must nourish and safeguard the seeds of liberty. Because, when successful, America blossoms into a magnificent place where everyone can practice their beliefs, share new ideas, and express individualism — this is when we are our best."
Melania Trump has stayed out of the campaign spotlight, except for a few events
Trump, whose mother passed away in January, has joined her husband for a few events at Mar-a-Lago.
She accompanied him when he spoke to the Trumpettes fan club in February, and then for a dinner the former president hosted for Hungarian leader Viktor Orbán last month.
She also ventured with him to the Morton and Barbara Mandel Recreation Center as the couple cast their ballots in the Florida presidential preference primary on March 19. "Stay tuned," the former first lady said smiling when asked about a return to presidential campaign politics.
Earlier this month, she was with the GOP nominee at fundraiser held at hedge fund manager John Paulson's Palm Beach home.
