Mattamy Homes planning outdoor amphitheater in Southern Grove, Tradition, Port St. Lucie
PORT ST. LUCIE — A developer is planning a 3,000-seat outdoor amphitheater in a 30-acre proposed park, which would be the largest such venue on the Treasure Coast for concerts, festivals and other events.
The Southern Grove Park & Amphitheater would be in the Southern Grove area of Tradition, southwest of the intersection of Becker Road and Village Parkway. The so-called "SoGro Park" would have an amphitheater on the south side of the property, an activity and entertainment area on the north side, and parking in the center, according to Mattamy Homes Southeast Florida President Dan Grosswald.
The Port St. Lucie City Council approved the necessary rezoning of 36 acres from agricultural to general use at a Sept. 11 meeting. Once the site plan is submitted and approved, the target opening would be sometime in 2025-26.
"The acoustics will be second to none," Mattamy Homes' website says. "From practically anywhere on the vast, open green space, your ears will be treated to the clear, sweet sounds of local and national performers."
The idea for the amphitheater was born in December 2019 at a community workshop. About 200 residents offered ideas on how to develop 1,200 acres in Tradition. Ticket sales and possible sponsorship opportunities are expected to cover performance expenses.
The amphitheater would be the second in St. Lucie County and the third on the Treasure Coast. The MidFlorida Credit Union Event Center in Port St. Lucie can seat 2,000. The Mansion at Tuckahoe in Jensen Beach can seat 900.
Southern Grove is already home to Cleveland Clinic Tradition Hospital, the Tradition Center for Innovation, Keiser University and other institutions and businesses.
Mattamy Homes is the largest privately owned homebuilder in North America.
