Madonna paid for care of late brother Anthony Ciccone despite rocky relationship: reports
Madonna paid for the care of her late brother Anthony Ciccone — who died late last week at the age of 66 — despite their alleged rocky relationship, according to media reports.
Anthony Gerard Ciccone had reportedly spent some time living on the streets and then in a rehabilitation center before his death, which was announced on Instagram Saturday by musician Joe Henry, who’s married to Madonna’s sister Melanie Ciccone.
“Anthony was a complex character; and God knows: we tangled in moments, as true brothers can,” Henry wrote, adding that “trouble fades” and “family remains — with hands reached across the table.”
Madonna, who reportedly had a complicated relationship with her brother, liked Henry’s post but didn’t comment on Anthony’s death until Monday when she posted to her Instagram story to thank him for planting “many important seeds” in her life.
On Monday, TMZ reported that the “Express Yourself” singer had been paying for Ciccone’s bills at the Michigan rehabilitation center.
He died after being at the facility “for a while,” the outlet reported citing “family sources.” He was the one who removed his feeding and breathing tubes — which he knew would ultimately lead to his death.
According to TMZ’s sources, Madonna and other relatives had been trying to help him for years, but he mostly rejected any help they offered.
He spent his last days surrounded by family members, including his sister Paula Ciccone and father Silvio Ciccone.
“Thank you for blowing my mind as a young girl and introducing me to Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Buddhism, Taoism, Charles Bukowski, Richard Brautigan, Jack Kerouac, Expansive Thinking, Outside the Box,” Madonna wrote Monday on her Instagram Story.
She also shared a vintage photo of all the Ciccone children.
